1:1 Autism & ADHD Teaching Assistant – Year 4

Barnet | £95–£110 per day | Full-time

The aim of good 1:1 support should not be to have a child dependent on an adult all day.

It should be to give them just enough support to succeed independently.

Parker Smith Inclusion is recruiting a 1:1 Teaching Assistant for a junior school in Barnet, supporting a Year 4 pupil with autism and ADHD.

The pupil enjoys being independent and does not need someone constantly directing him. The right Teaching Assistant will understand when to step in, when to offer guidance and, just as importantly, when to step back.

The role

You will provide consistent 1:1 support throughout the school day, helping the pupil access learning while continuing to develop his confidence and independence.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Providing individual support within the classroom

  • Breaking down instructions where required

  • Helping with focus, organisation and transitions

  • Supporting emotional regulation

  • Redirecting attention without creating unnecessary dependence

  • Encouraging independent problem-solving

  • Supporting positive relationships with peers and staff

  • Working closely with the class teacher and SEND team

What are we looking for?

Essential:

  • Experience working with children within a school, SEND or similar setting

  • A patient and encouraging approach

  • An understanding that autism and ADHD can present differently for every child

  • Ability to support without becoming overbearing

  • Reliable full-time availability

Desirable:

  • Previous 1:1 experience

  • Experience supporting autism

  • Experience supporting ADHD

  • Primary or junior school experience

Why consider this role?

Some 1:1 roles involve intensive adult-led support. This one requires something slightly different.

You need to become a reliable point of support while allowing the pupil the space to develop his own independence.

For someone who enjoys relationship-based SEND support and watching a child gradually need them less, this could be a very rewarding role.

£95–£110 per day, depending on experience.
