What would you teach first to a pupil who has decided they are bad at everything?

This 1:1 SEN HLTA role means planning and leading one-to-one sessions for pupils with Autism, ADHD and SEMH who are currently out of school. Sessions take place in pupils' homes and in community spaces across Kingston and Richmond. Many of these young people have spent months out of education, and most have stopped believing school is for them. Your first job is to change that belief, one session at a time.

I am currently working with a well-established SEN provision that organises outreach services, and they need HLTAs who can plan and teach independently.

Why This Role Is Different

In school, most HLTAs work around someone else's priorities. The timetable, the class plan, the bell. Here, you start with the pupil. You find out what they can already do, what they avoid and what keeps them engaged, then you build from there.

That makes it a strong move for an experienced HLTA who wants full ownership of the learning. It also suits Learning Mentors and alternative provision staff who already work closely with one young person at a time and want to lead the planning.

What a Week Looks Like

A typical week might mean four or five pupils, each with their own plan. One pupil with Autism works best with a fixed routine, the same start time, the same opening task, and the same seat. Another, with ADHD, needs short bursts of work and a walk between them. A pupil with SEMH needs might spend the first few weeks deciding whether to trust you, and that time counts as progress. You keep notes on each one, adjust your plans and update families on what is moving forward.

About the Provision and the Pupils

The provision has supported pupils outside mainstream education for many years. The young people you work with have Autism, ADHD or SEMH needs, and many are working below age-related expectations in English and maths. Some find leaving the house hard. Others are ready to learn but need a calmer space than a busy classroom. The team sets clear expectations, provides training and gives you someone to call when a session does not go to plan.

The role suits HLTAs living in or near Twickenham, Surbiton, Teddington, Wimbledon or New Malden.
