What is a seven-year-old telling you when they hide under the table at the start of every maths lesson?
Maybe the work looks too hard. Maybe something happened at home last night. Maybe the last adult who asked them to come out raised their voice. In this setting, finding out is the job.
I am currently working with a small alternative provision in South West London for primary pupils with SEMH needs. They are looking for an SEMH Behaviour Specialist on a long-term to permanent basis, full-time or four days a week.
Why This Role Stands Out
In a large school, behaviour support often means arriving after something has gone wrong. You settle the situation and leave before you learn why it happened.
Here, with a small number of children, you see the whole picture. You notice that one boy struggles every Monday, or that a girl copes well until the dinner hall gets loud. You turn what you notice into a plan, and you share it so every adult in the building responds to that child the same way. That is specialist work, and the daily rate is set at that level. The setting is also open to four days a week, if full-time does not suit your life right now.
What Your Week Could Look Like
On Monday, a pupil arrives with his coat zipped to his chin and refuses to take it off. You let him keep it on, sit beside him and talk about the dinosaur on his lunchbox until he is ready to start. On Wednesday, you catch a parent at pick-up to tell her about a good afternoon, the first good news she has had from school in months. On Friday, you sit down with colleagues to agree on a new approach for a child whose week went backwards. Small wins, noticed and built on, week after week.
About the Setting and the Pupils
The provision is small, so you know every child and every child knows you. Pupils are primary-aged with SEMH needs. Some also have ADHD, autism, or early experiences that make trusting adults hard. Staff speak with families often, so what works at home and what works in the setting can align.
The setting is within easy reach of Surbiton, New Malden, Wimbledon, Twickenham and Teddington.
What the Role Involves
- Working one-to-one and in small groups with primary pupils with SEMH needs
- Spotting the patterns behind each child's behaviour and planning support around them
- Staying calm when a child is distressed, and helping them back to learning
- Guiding colleagues so that every adult uses the same approach with each child
- Keeping families in the loop and sharing good news as often as hard news
Who Should Apply
- You have supported primary-aged children with SEMH needs or behaviour that challenges
- You keep your voice low when everyone else raises theirs
- You have worked as a Behaviour Mentor, Learning Mentor, Pastoral Lead or senior SEMH TA
- You come from youth work, social care or a PRU and want to focus on younger children
- You plan to move into teaching, educational psychology or play therapy and want real experience first
