For some pupils, expressing themselves through a drawing, painting or creative project can be easier than finding the words to explain how they feel. For others, creating something they are proud of can be the first time in a long time that they experience genuine success in a classroom.
A specialist education setting in London is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Art Teacher to teach young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.
This is an opportunity for an Art Teacher who wants to do more than deliver lessons. You will have the opportunity to use creativity to build confidence, develop relationships and help pupils re engage with education.
The setting
The school provides specialist education for pupils with SEMH needs who may have experienced difficulties within mainstream education.
The provision offers a structured, supportive and nurturing environment where pupils receive personalised support based on their individual learning, behavioural and emotional needs.
Staff work closely with pupils, pastoral teams and specialist professionals to create positive learning experiences and help young people make meaningful progress.
The Art Teacher role
As an Art Teacher, you will plan, prepare and deliver high quality Art lessons that are engaging, accessible and appropriately challenging.
You will teach practical and theoretical aspects of Art, introducing pupils to a range of artists, techniques, materials and creative processes.
You will adapt your teaching to meet individual learning needs and use creative approaches to engage pupils who may have previously struggled within traditional classroom environments.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Planning and delivering engaging Art lessons for pupils with SEMH needs
• Developing and delivering a broad, balanced and relevant Art curriculum
• Differentiating lessons to meet a range of learning abilities and individual needs
• Teaching a variety of artistic techniques, materials and creative processes
• Developing pupils' artistic knowledge, practical skills and confidence
• Encouraging creativity, critical thinking and independent expression
• Assessing, monitoring and recording pupil progress
• Using assessment information to inform lesson planning and personalised targets
• Maintaining high expectations for learning, behaviour and achievement
• Creating a safe, positive and inclusive classroom environment
• Supporting pupils to develop resilience, independence and confidence
• Working collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff and support professionals
• Contributing to EHCP reviews and individual support planning where appropriate
• Promoting positive behaviour through consistent, restorative and nurturing approaches
Who we are looking for
We are looking for an Art Teacher who is passionate about their subject and committed to inclusive education.
You may be an experienced Art Teacher with a background in mainstream education, or you may already have experience working within SEN, SEMH, alternative provision or a specialist school environment.
Experience of working with pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs would be highly beneficial, but the most important qualities are your ability to build relationships, adapt your teaching and see the potential in every pupil.
