The Role

As an Art Teaching Assistant, you'll work closely with the Art Department to support engaging and inclusive lessons that encourage creativity, independence and self-expression.

You'll provide practical classroom support, work individually with students who require additional guidance and help create a calm, inspiring learning environment where every young person feels encouraged to explore their artistic potential.

No two days are the same. One lesson may involve painting and mixed media, while another focuses on ceramics, sculpture, printmaking or digital design. Throughout each session, you'll help students overcome barriers to learning while celebrating their creativity and personal achievements.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the planning and delivery of engaging Art and Design lessons.

• Work with students on a one-to-one basis and in small groups to develop artistic skills and confidence.

• Adapt creative activities to meet individual learning, emotional and sensory needs.

• Encourage students to experiment with a variety of artistic techniques, including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, mixed media and digital art.

• Promote positive behaviour through consistent encouragement and relationship-building.

• Prepare resources and maintain a safe, organised and welcoming creative workspace.

• Celebrate student achievements through classroom displays, exhibitions and creative projects.

• Ensure specialist equipment and materials are used safely at all times.

• Support students' emotional wellbeing and report safeguarding concerns in line with school procedures.

We're Looking For Someone Who

• Holds a Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, or a qualification in Art, Design, Fine Art, Illustration, Creative Practice or a related subject.

• Has experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, SEND, Autism, ADHD or additional behavioural needs.

• Has worked within an SEMH school, Alternative Provision, PRU, youth service or similar educational setting, or has transferable experience.

• Enjoys working across a range of artistic disciplines and creative techniques.

• Understands how creative expression can support emotional regulation, confidence and wellbeing.

• Can build positive, trusting relationships with young people.

• Remains calm, patient and resilient when supporting students during challenging moments.

• Is passionate about helping every young person achieve their full potential.
