Learning Support Assistant – Primary School

Location: Havering
Start Date: ASAP
Setting: Mainstream Primary | PAYE

The right person can make a real difference to a child's day.

Some children learn best when they can move, explore and get hands-on. Others need a bit more patience, encouragement and someone who understands that behaviour is often a way of communicating.

We're looking for someone who can bring all of that to a mainstream primary school in Havering, supporting children with autism, ADHD and complex additional needs.

You don't have to be an experienced Teaching Assistant to be considered. If you're good with children, full of energy and able to build trust, this could be a brilliant way to get into SEND education.

What does the role involve?

You'll be part of the school day, helping children feel settled, take part in learning and develop at their own pace.

That might mean taking a more hands-on approach to a lesson, finding a different way to explain an activity, helping a child through a difficult transition or giving them the encouragement they need to try something independently.

You'll provide 1:1 and small-group support, help children manage emotions and behaviour, and work alongside teachers to make sure each child gets the support they need.

Being able to connect with the child matters just as much as helping them with the work.

Could this be you?

Perhaps you've worked in a nursery, supported children in childcare, coached a sports team or worked in care, youth work or support work. Maybe you have personal experience of supporting someone with additional needs.

Whatever your background, we're interested in how you work with children.

You'll need to be:

  • Energetic, patient and approachable

  • Confident building relationships and getting involved

  • Calm and adaptable when plans change

  • Comfortable thinking on your feet

  • Keen to help children develop their confidence and independence

You should be happy to make learning fun, get involved in activities and recognise when a child needs encouragement, space or a different approach.

Previous school experience is helpful, but it's not essential.

What can the school offer?

You'll be joining a welcoming mainstream primary school where inclusion is taken seriously and staff are encouraged to help every child make progress.

There's a supportive leadership team, excellent CPD and opportunities to develop your career, with the possibility of a permanent position for the right person.
