Autism & Behaviour Support Assistant – Barnet
£95–£110 per day | Full-time | SEND / Autism / Behaviour Support
Some pupils do not need someone to simply sit beside them in class.
They need an adult who can read the situation, understand what may be behind the behaviour, stay calm when things become difficult and help them find their way back into learning.
We are working with a specialist SEND setting in Barnet looking for an Autism & Behaviour Support Assistant to join their team on a full-time basis.
This would suit an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant, SEND Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or Behaviour Mentor who enjoys building strong relationships with pupils and understands that behaviour is often a form of communication.
The role
You will support pupils with a range of additional needs, including autism and associated social, emotional and behavioural needs.
Your day may include:
-
Supporting pupils to engage with lessons and structured activities
-
Helping pupils regulate when they are overwhelmed, anxious or dysregulated
-
Using clear routines, boundaries and consistent communication
-
Building trusting relationships with pupils who may have struggled in previous educational settings
-
Supporting social interaction, independence and emotional regulation
-
Working closely with teachers, therapists and wider support staff
-
Helping create a calm and predictable environment where pupils can succeed
This is not about being the loudest person in the room or trying to control behaviour.
The strongest candidates are often the people who are calm, observant, consistent and able to build trust over time.
We would be interested in hearing from you if you have:
Essential:
-
Experience working with children, young people or vulnerable individuals
-
A calm and patient approach
-
Confidence managing challenging situations appropriately
-
Strong communication skills
-
The ability to work consistently as part of a wider team
-
A genuine interest in SEND and inclusive education
Desirable:
-
Previous experience supporting autistic pupils
-
Experience with SEMH, behaviour support or emotional regulation
-
School, youth work, care, mentoring or residential experience
-
Team Teach, PRICE, MAPA or other positive behaviour support training
Why consider this role?
This is the kind of role where progress is not always measured by worksheets or test scores.
Sometimes progress is a pupil staying in class for longer than they managed last week.
Sometimes it is asking for a break instead of walking out.
Sometimes it is trusting another adult enough to accept support.
For the right person, those small changes can make the role incredibly rewarding.
