Autism Behaviour Support Mentor – Special School
Location: Newham, East London
Start Date: Immediate
Contract: Full-time
Are you an experienced Behaviour Mentor who understands autism, emotional regulation and the reasons behind challenging behaviour?
Parker Smith Inclusion is working with a specialist SEND school in Newham that is looking for a resilient and experienced Autism Behaviour Support Mentor to join their team.
This role would suit someone with experience supporting young people with autism who may display behaviours of concern, ideally with a background in a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), SEMH provision or alternative provision.
We are looking for someone who can remain calm under pressure, build positive relationships and understand that behaviour is communication.
About the Role
You will work closely with autistic pupils who may experience difficulties with emotional regulation, communication and engagement. Your role will be to help identify triggers, implement effective support strategies and create an environment where pupils feel safe and able to learn.
Responsibilities will include:
- Providing individualised behaviour support to pupils with autism.
- Recognising triggers and early signs of dysregulation.
- Using proactive strategies to prevent escalation.
- Supporting pupils during periods of heightened distress.
- Applying appropriate de-escalation and low-arousal techniques.
- Building trusting relationships while maintaining clear boundaries.
- Working collaboratively with teachers and the wider SEND team.
- Supporting the implementation of individual behaviour and support plans.
- Encouraging emotional regulation, communication and independence.
The Ideal Candidate
We are particularly interested in candidates who have:
- Previous experience supporting autistic pupils with behaviours of concern.
- Experience within a PRU, SEMH school, alternative provision or specialist SEND setting.
- Strong de-escalation and behaviour management skills.
- A calm, patient and emotionally resilient approach.
- An understanding that behaviour is communication and may indicate unmet needs, anxiety or sensory overload.
- The ability to remain professional and not take behaviour personally.
- Confidence working as part of a team to implement consistent strategies.
Training in Team Teach, Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), or other recognised behaviour support approaches would be advantageous.
