£206.75 - £268.21 PAYE per day, in line with MPS Inner London
If you have experience teaching autistic children with complex needs, you will already know that this kind of role is very different from a mainstream classroom.
Progress looks different. The pace is different. The wins are quieter, but often far more meaningful.
I am working with a mainstream primary school in Wandsworth, South West London, that has a well-established ASC specialist base. They are now looking for an experienced and thoughtful teacher to take responsibility for a small class of pupils who need structure, understanding, and consistency to access learning.
The school and SEN unit
The unit supports a class of 8 pupils in Years 3–5, all of whom have Autism and complex needs. These pupils benefit from a highly structured environment, clear routines, and adults who truly understand sensory regulation, communication differences, and emotional needs.
Although the base sits within a mainstream primary school, it operates with its own specialist approach. Inclusion is purposeful and planned, not forced, and pupils are supported to engage at a level that is right for them.
Class sizes are small for a reason. Relationships matter here.
The Autism Primary Teacher role
As the Autism Primary Teacher, you will have responsibility for planning and delivering learning that meets pupils where they are.
This role involves:
- Teaching a small class of autistic pupils with complex profiles
- Creating a calm, predictable classroom environment
- Adapting the curriculum to suit communication, sensory, and learning needs
- Working closely with specialist support staff
- Supporting emotional regulation alongside learning
- Liaising with parents, SEN staff, and external professionals
You will have the time and space to teach properly, rather than constantly managing behaviour.
Who this role suits
This role would suit a teacher who:
- Has QTS
- Has experience working with autistic pupils and complex needs
- Understands sensory processing and emotional regulation
- Is patient, reflective, and adaptable in their approach
- Is confident in differentiating the curriculum meaningfully
- Wants to work in a specialist setting within a mainstream school
This is not a role for someone looking to apply mainstream strategies without adaptation.
Support and culture
The school understands that specialist teaching requires the right support. You will be working as part of a collaborative team that values communication, consistency, and professional trust.
There is a clear structure in place within the ASC base, and leadership understands the importance of giving specialist staff autonomy to do their job well.
