Autism Support Assistant - Specialist SEND Provision | Barnet
£95–£110 per day, depending on experience
Full-time | Long-term
Barnet, North London
I am working with a specialist SEND setting in Barnet that is looking to appoint an experienced Autism Support Assistant to join its team on a full-time, long-term basis.
This role would suit someone who understands that good autism support is not about simply managing behaviour. It is about building trust, creating consistency and helping pupils feel secure enough to engage with learning.
You may currently be working as a SEN Teaching Assistant, SEND Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or Autism Support Worker and be looking for a role where your experience can genuinely be put to good use.
The role
You will support pupils with autism across the school day, helping them access learning, develop communication and independence, and manage transitions and changes to routine.
Your responsibilities may include:
-
Providing individual and small-group support
-
Supporting pupils with autism and associated communication needs
-
Helping pupils regulate when they feel overwhelmed or anxious
-
Using clear routines, visual support and structured approaches
-
Supporting engagement with lessons and wider school activities
-
Working closely with teachers and the wider SEND team
-
Encouraging independence rather than creating unnecessary reliance
-
Supporting pupils consistently across both learning and social situations
What we are looking for
Essential:
-
Previous experience supporting children or young people with autism or additional needs
-
A calm, patient and consistent approach
-
Confidence supporting pupils who may communicate or regulate differently
-
The ability to build positive professional relationships
-
A genuine interest in specialist SEND education
Desirable:
-
Experience within a special school or specialist provision
-
Experience as a SEN Teaching Assistant, LSA or support worker
-
Knowledge of visual communication, structured teaching or sensory regulation
-
Experience supporting pupils with more complex autism presentations
Why consider this role?
This is a good opportunity for someone who wants to develop deeper experience in autism support rather than work in a general classroom support position.
You will be joining a specialist environment where SEND support is central to the role, with the opportunity to work closely with experienced education professionals and develop your understanding of autism in practice.
