How do you teach early reading to a 16-year-old with autism, and still treat them as the young adult they are becoming?

Plenty of ASAP Teacher posts come with a class in difficulty. This one does not. I am working with a secondary special school in North West London that needs an Autism Teacher for a settled KS3-KS5 ASC class, starting as soon as possible.

About the Role

The pupils know their routines, and a strong team works alongside them every day. A Learning Support Assistant who knows each young person well is covering the class for now. What the class needs is a Teacher to take their learning further.

Most pupils are working between pre-key stage standards and KS1 in English and maths. Your job is to meet them at those early levels with lessons that suit teenagers and young adults. That might be a phonics session built around a bus timetable, or a maths lesson that ends with paying for something in a real shop. You decide what comes next for them.

About the School

This specialist secondary school supports young people with autism and complex learning needs across KS3 to KS5. Autism classes are small, so you can get to know every pupil well. Learning centres on communication and the everyday skills young people use beyond school, from travelling on a bus to making a snack.

The school is within commuting distance of Wembley and Finchley.

What You Will Do

  • Plan and teach English and maths from pre-key stage standards up to KS1
  • Adapt lessons and resources so they feel right for teenagers and young adults
  • Lead your LSAs and build on the routines they have kept in place
  • Use visual supports and structured teaching to help pupils feel calm and ready to learn
  • Track small steps of progress against each pupil’s EHC Plan outcomes

About You

  • A genuine interest in teaching young people with autism and complex learning needs
  • QTS or QTLS
  • Experience teaching early reading, phonics or early numbers in any setting
  • Confidence in leading a class team and sharing planning with support staff
  • Primary-trained Teachers and mainstream Teachers ready to move into SEND are welcome to apply

Special school experience helps, but it is not essential. Strong early literacy and numeracy teaching matters more here, along with the patience to let trust build at the pupils’ pace.

This class is ready for its Teacher now. The team has kept things steady, so the right person can settle quickly and move learning forward this term.
