If you already work in SEN, you will understand that this is not a passive support role. This is about being fully present, emotionally attuned, and ready to support children through both calm and challenging moments.
Supporting autistic children well takes patience, emotional awareness, consistency, and the ability to remain grounded when a child is struggling to regulate.
This Autism Teaching Assistant role is based in a specialist primary setting supporting pupils with Autism / ASC. Many children have sensory processing differences, communication needs, and periods of emotional dysregulation. Some pupils are pre-verbal or non-verbal. Others may find transitions, changes to routine, and learning environments overwhelming.
The setting has been carefully designed to be structured, predictable, and calm, creating the right conditions for children to feel safe, regulated, and ready to engage with learning.
About the Autism Teaching Assistant role
As an Autism Teaching Assistant, you will work closely alongside teachers and specialist staff to support children with:
Daily routines supported by visual structures
Sensory regulation and personalised strategies
Play-based and child-led learning approaches
Emotional regulation and co-regulation
Communication support, including visuals, PECS, and alternative communication methods
Class sizes are small, staffing levels are strong, and support is genuinely team-based. You will be guided and supported, not left to manage complex needs alone.
This is a role for someone who understands that progress in SEND is not always immediate or obvious, but every small step matters.
What this setting offers
Many support staff leave SEN roles due to a lack of training, support, or understanding from leadership.
This environment has been created with staff wellbeing and sustainability in mind.
You can expect:
Small class groups with strong adult presence
Clear and consistent approaches to behaviour and regulation
Ongoing access to specialist guidance and training
Leadership that understands Autism and supports staff
A calm, purposeful environment, not reactive or chaotic
This is a setting where relationships are prioritised and trust is the foundation for learning.
Who this role is suited to
Has experience with SEND, whether in schools, care, youth work, or personal experience
Has a real understanding of Autism beyond theory
Can remain calm and supportive when a child is dysregulated
Is reflective, patient, and emotionally resilient
Is committed to working in SEND, not just exploring it short-term
You may be a psychology or education graduate, an experienced Teaching Assistant, or someone with personal experience supporting autistic children or young people.
What matters most is your mindset, emotional intelligence, and commitment to the children.
