Autism Teaching Assistant – Special School – Surrey (Accessible from Sutton) – Immediate Start

Are you a compassionate, patient, and resilient professional with a passion for supporting young people with Autism and associated needs? We are seeking a dedicated Autism Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school setting in Surrey, conveniently accessible from Sutton, providing a nurturing, structured, and supportive environment for pupils with a range of complex needs.

The Role

As an Autism Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Support young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and associated needs, including sensory processing differences, communication challenges, anxiety, ADHD, and learning difficulties.
  • Work closely with class teachers, therapists, and support staff to deliver highly personalised learning and care plans.
  • Use autism-specific strategies (such as visual supports, routines, and communication tools) to promote engagement, independence, and emotional regulation.
  • Support pupils with social communication, emotional understanding, and daily life skills alongside academic learning.
  • Implement positive behaviour support strategies in a calm, consistent, and empathetic manner.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils, providing reassurance, structure, and encouragement throughout the school day.
  • Help maintain a safe, calm, and inclusive learning environment tailored to individual sensory and emotional needs.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Patient, understanding, and emotionally resilient.
  • Passionate about supporting children and young people with Autism and complex needs.
  • Confident in supporting pupils with communication difficulties, sensory sensitivities, or behaviours that may challenge.
  • Adaptable, reflective, and eager to develop their skills in a specialist setting.
  • Experienced in SEN, Autism, or special school environments (desirable but not essential).
  • A collaborative team player who values consistency, creativity, and pupil-centred practice.

What the School Offers

  • Small class sizes with high levels of support, enabling meaningful one-to-one and small-group work.
  • A specialist, autism-friendly environment designed to support emotional wellbeing and learning.
  • Ongoing training and professional development in Autism, communication strategies, and positive behaviour support.
  • A warm, supportive staff team committed to making a genuine difference in pupils’ lives.
  • A school culture that celebrates progress in all its forms—academic, social, and emotional.
