We are recruiting an Autism Teaching Assistant for a specialist SEN school in Pinner, Harrow, supporting autistic pupils across primary and secondary age groups. This is a specialist autism support role suited to candidates seeking a long-term position within SEND education, rather than a general classroom Teaching Assistant role.

 

School Overview

  • Specialist SEN school supporting autistic children and young people

  • Pupils across primary and secondary age ranges

  • Small class sizes with high staff-to-pupil ratios

  • Pupils may be non-verbal, sensory-sensitive or experience anxiety

  • Autism-informed practice embedded throughout the school

  • Use of visual timetables, sensory integration and regulation strategies

  • Multidisciplinary teams including therapists and autism specialists

  • Strong focus on emotional wellbeing and regulation alongside learning

 

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for autistic pupils

  • Support sensory regulation and emotional wellbeing

  • Assist communication using PECS, Makaton, AAC and visual supports

  • Support pupils with routines, transitions and structured activities

  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs and therapy teams

  • Encourage independence, confidence and communication

  • Support personal care when required, with training provided

 

Suitable Backgrounds

  • Psychology, education or child development graduates

  • SEN Teaching Assistants or Autism Support Assistants

  • Learning Support Assistants, support workers or youth workers

  • Individuals with lived or personal experience of autism or SEND

  • Candidates seeking long-term careers within SEN schools or autism provision

 

Candidate Requirements

  • Genuine interest in autism and neurodiversity

  • Understanding that behaviour is a form of communication

  • Calm, patient and emotionally intelligent approach

  • Consistent, adaptable and reflective working style

  • Willingness to engage in specialist SEN training

  • Ability to commit to a long-term role
