A specialist SEN primary school in Edgware is seeking a dedicated Autism Teaching Assistant to support pupils with Autism, Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties and complex needs. These children require more than academic support. They need adults who are calm, compassionate and fully present throughout the school day. Many pupils are non verbal and rely on familiar, trusted adults to help them feel safe and comfortable within structured routines. Progress is often measured in engagement, connection and small but powerful steps towards independence.
The role
• Provide 1:1 and small group support tailored to pupils with Autism and complex needs
• Support personal care, hygiene, feeding and mobility with dignity and sensitivity where required
• Deliver and assist with sensory based activities to promote engagement and emotional regulation
• Use visual timetables, structured routines and communication strategies such as PECS or AAC
• Work closely with teachers, therapists and the wider SEN team to follow EHCP targets and individual plans
• Maintain a calm, predictable and nurturing learning environment
Who this role would suit
• Experience supporting children or young people with Autism, PMLD or complex SEN
• Background in special schools, care, support work, youth services or healthcare
• Confidence providing personal care and supporting physical needs if required
• Patient, attentive and emotionally resilient approach
• Reliable and committed to a long term role where consistency is essential
