You already know that working with young people with Autism is not something you can do on autopilot. It asks for consistency, attentiveness, and a genuine willingness to understand how each individual experiences the world. What you deserve in return is a setting that takes the same care with its staff as it does with its pupils. Not every school manages that. This one does.

This is a specialist school in Mole Valley, Surrey, supporting pupils aged 7 to 16. The primary needs across the school are Autism and SEMH, and many pupils also present with ADHD and social communication differences. Every pupil holds an Education, Health and Care Plan. A significant number of pupils carry high levels of anxiety and have experienced trauma, and the school's approach reflects that. Provision is built around the individual. Staff and therapy teams work closely together, and personal development carries as much weight as academic progress.

The school is well-resourced and deliberately structured to give staff the conditions they need to do good work:

  • Small classes with high adult-to-pupil ratios
  • Personalised learning and therapy plans for every pupil
  • Close working between the teaching staff and the therapy team
  • Consistent leadership that values and develops its staff

As an Autism Teaching Assistant, your role sits at the centre of each pupil's day. You will support in class, help pupils manage anxiety and dysregulation calmly and safely, build relationships over time, and work alongside teachers and therapists to implement individual plans. Many of the young people you support will have had difficult experiences before arriving at this school. Your consistency and steadiness will matter more than any strategy or resource.

You will not be left to figure things out on your own. Training and development are part of the role from the start.

This school is open to candidates from a range of backgrounds. What matters most is your attitude, your ability to build trust with young people, and your commitment to showing up for them every day. The following backgrounds are particularly relevant:

  • Graduates in psychology, education, criminology, or a related subject
  • Those with personal experience of Autism, ADHD, or trauma, as a sibling, parent, or through care
  • Youth workers, learning mentors, or community support workers
  • Residential or children's care workers
  • Anyone who has supported young people through anxiety, behavioural difficulties, or emotional crisis in any setting

School experience is not a requirement. If you have relevant transferable skills and a clear understanding of why this work matters, your application is welcome.

The role runs 8am to 4pm, term time only. It begins as a long-term position with a genuine pathway to permanent employment for the right candidate. The start date is flexible, with some positions available immediately and others from September.
