Autism Teaching Assistant

Location: Hounslow, West London
Salary: £95 - £100 per day PAYE
Job Type: Full time, Temp to Perm
Start Date: September 2026

About the role

Some children communicate differently.

They may need more time, more patience and an adult who understands that progress does not always look the same for every pupil.

A mainstream primary school in Hounslow is looking for an Autism Teaching Assistant to join its complex needs classroom and provide consistent, individualised support to pupils in Years 2 and 3.

This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to work closely with children with significant additional needs and help them access learning, communication and everyday school life.

The setting

You will be working within a dedicated complex needs classroom in a mainstream primary school.

The pupils have a range of significant SEND needs, including Autism and communication difficulties. Some pupils are non-speaking and some require support with intimate and personal care.

The classroom provides a structured environment where pupils can receive the individual support they need while developing communication, independence and confidence.

The role

As an Autism Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support

  • Support pupils with Autism and complex SEND

  • Help non-speaking pupils communicate and engage

  • Support pupils to access classroom activities

  • Provide personal and intimate care where required

  • Follow individual learning, care and support plans

  • Encourage independence and confidence

  • Build strong and trusting relationships

  • Support emotional regulation and wellbeing

  • Work closely with the class teacher and inclusion team

Who we are looking for

  • SEN Teaching Assistant

  • Learning Support Assistant

  • Student Inclusion Mentor

  • Support Worker

  • Healthcare Assistant

You will be:

  • Patient and compassionate

  • Calm and consistent

  • Comfortable providing personal care

  • Reliable and professional

  • A strong communicator

  • Confident following individual support plans

  • Committed to helping children develop their independence

Why this role matters

For some children, a small step can represent a huge achievement.

It could be communicating a need for the first time.

It could be joining an activity with less support.

It could be becoming more comfortable in a new environment.

Your consistency can give a child the security they need to take those steps.
