Autism Teaching Assistant – Barnet

New SEND Provision Opening January 2027 | £95–£110 per day | Full-time

There is something quite different about joining a new provision from the beginning.

Rather than stepping into established routines, you have the opportunity to become part of the team as it develops, getting to know the pupils, building relationships and helping create the consistency and structure they need from day one.

I am currently recruiting Autism Teaching Assistants for a specialist SEND school in Barnet that is preparing to open a new provision in January 2027.

We are looking for people who understand that supporting autistic young people is not about expecting every pupil to communicate, learn or regulate in the same way.

It is about getting to know the individual.

What will the role involve?

As an Autism Teaching Assistant / SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teaching and support staff to help pupils access learning and develop greater independence.

Your responsibilities may include:

• Supporting autistic pupils individually and in small groups

• Helping pupils understand routines, transitions and expectations

• Supporting communication, interaction and emotional regulation

• Using visual and structured approaches where appropriate

• Helping pupils remain engaged with learning at a level appropriate to them

• Responding calmly when pupils become anxious, overwhelmed or dysregulated

• Encouraging independence rather than doing everything for the pupil

• Working consistently with teachers and the wider SEND team

The pupils may need significant support with communication, learning and regulation, so we are particularly interested in people who are patient, emotionally resilient and able to remain calm when situations become challenging.

Who are we looking for?

Essential

• Experience working with children, young people or vulnerable individuals

• A genuine interest in autism and SEND

• A calm, consistent and patient approach

• Good communication skills

• Confidence working as part of a team

• Availability for full-time work from January 2027

Particularly useful experience

• Autism / ASC

• SEN or SEND schools

• SLD or additional learning needs

• Communication needs

• Behaviour or emotional regulation

• Personal care

• Youth work, care or support work

Previous school experience is valuable, but we would also consider people transferring from care, youth work, residential support, mental health or other relevant settings.
