Autism Teaching Assistant – SEND Support

Barnet, North London | £95–£110 per day | Full-time

The strongest Autism Teaching Assistants do not expect every pupil to communicate, learn or regulate in the same way.

They take the time to understand the individual.

Parker Smith Inclusion is recruiting an Autism Teaching Assistant for a specialist SEND setting in Barnet.

You will support children or young people with autism who may also have communication, sensory or learning needs, helping them participate more confidently in education and develop greater independence.

What will your role involve?

Working closely with teachers and SEND professionals, you may:

  • Support pupils with autism throughout the school day

  • Help pupils understand routines and transitions

  • Use visual or structured communication approaches

  • Support sensory and emotional regulation

  • Encourage communication and social interaction

  • Provide individual or small-group learning support

  • Help pupils build confidence and independence

  • Reinforce consistent strategies

  • Support pupils following periods of dysregulation

  • Adapt your approach to each pupil rather than relying on one method

Who are we looking for?

Essential:

  • Experience working with children or young people

  • A patient and consistent approach

  • Strong communication skills

  • Confidence supporting additional needs

  • Full-time availability

Desirable experience:

  • Autism

  • SEND

  • Special schools

  • 1:1 support

  • Communication needs

  • Sensory processing needs

  • Learning Support Assistant or Teaching Assistant work

Candidates from care, childcare or support-work backgrounds may also be suitable where they have relevant experience supporting autistic children or young people.

What makes this role rewarding?

Progress may not always be immediate or obvious.

It could be a pupil managing a transition with less support, initiating communication, becoming more comfortable in a classroom or completing something independently for the first time.

Those moments build over time.

If you enjoy patient, relationship-led support and want to develop deeper autism-specific experience, this could be a strong next step.

Pay: £95–£110 per day, depending on experience.
