Speech & Language Therapist - Band 7
School-Based Role | North / Central London
Full-time or Part-time | Term-time or Full Year Considered
Supporting communication in schools is about far more than targets and timetables. It’s about helping children feel understood, confident, and able to take part in learning and relationships.
We are seeking an experienced Band 7 Speech & Language Therapist to join a well-established, forward-thinking school-based service. This role is ideal for a clinician who enjoys working at both an individual and systemic level - supporting pupils directly while also shaping inclusive communication practice across whole school communities.
The Setting
You will be based across one or more mainstream and/or specialist school settings, working closely with teaching staff, SENCOs, families, and multidisciplinary colleagues. The schools value collaboration, reflective practice, and evidence-informed intervention, and are committed to creating communication-friendly environments where all pupils can access learning.
The service takes a neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based approach, recognising that communication differences are part of human variation, and that meaningful inclusion requires understanding, flexibility, and partnership.
The Role
This is a varied and senior clinical role with space for autonomy, creativity, and professional influence. Your work will include:
-
Holding a specialist paediatric caseload within school settings (e.g. autism, DLD, speech sound disorders, social communication needs, language processing differences)
-
Delivering assessment and intervention that is functional, contextualised, and embedded within the classroom
-
Advising teachers and support staff, modelling strategies that support language development, emotional regulation, and access to learning
-
Supporting SENCOs with planning, provision mapping, and outcomes-focused support
-
Contributing to whole-school approaches, including universal and targeted communication strategies
-
Delivering training and workshops for school staff and parents
-
Writing clear, high-quality reports that inform EHCP processes and educational planning
-
Working collaboratively with occupational therapists, educational psychologists, and other professionals
You will typically spend the majority of your time in schools, with flexibility for report writing, planning, and reflective work.
Professional Autonomy & Support
This role offers a strong balance between independent clinical judgement and collaborative working. You will manage your own caseload and diary, with the freedom to adapt your approach to the needs of each school and pupil.
You will also benefit from:
-
Regular clinical supervision and peer support
-
Opportunities to contribute to service development and innovation
-
A culture that values CPD, reflective practice, and clinical discussion
-
A leadership team who understand the realities of school-based therapy and value therapist wellbeing
About You
You will likely:
-
Be an HCPC-registered Speech & Language Therapist at Band 7 level
-
Have substantial experience working with children and young people in education settings
-
Be confident supporting pupils with autism and neurodevelopmental communication profiles
-
Have strong consultation and coaching skills when working with school staff
-
Enjoy thinking beyond the therapy room, influencing environments and systems
-
Value collaborative, strengths-based and neurodiversity-affirming practice
You may be looking to consolidate your Band 7 experience in a school environment, or to step into a role where your voice and expertise genuinely shape practice.
