For a teenager who has been told they are "too much" more times than they can count, what changes when one adult decides to stay anyway?

About the Role
I am currently working with a specialist secondary setting in Richmond, South West London, recruiting a Behaviour Mentor to support a small group of pupils across KS3 and KS4. The pupils you would be working with have Autism, ADHD, SEMH needs and associated learning difficulties. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to build real relationships, not just cover a rota.
About the School
This is a specialist setting supporting secondary-age pupils with additional needs in a nurturing, therapeutic environment. Classes are small, and staffing is generous, so staff have the time to actually get to know each pupil rather than firefighting all day. Teaching staff, families and external professionals work closely together here, and behaviour support is built into a proper framework rather than left to individual judgment. Staff have access to specialist training and clear routes for career progression. The school is easily reached from Kingston, Teddington, Hampton, Isleworth and Feltham.
Role Responsibilities
- Provide consistent 1:1 and small-group behaviour support for pupils with Autism, ADHD, SEMH and associated learning difficulties across KS3 and KS4
- Build calm, trusted relationships that help pupils regulate and re-engage with learning
- Support the delivery of individual behaviour plans alongside teaching and therapeutic staff
- Use de-escalation and restorative approaches to manage difficult moments safely
- Track pupil progress and communicate clearly with the wider staff team
Who Should Apply
- Experience supporting children or young people with Autism, ADHD or SEMH, whether gained in a school, care setting or youth work role
- Calm under pressure, patient and resilient when behaviour gets challenging
- A creative problem solver who can adapt to what each pupil needs in the moment
- Comfortable working closely as part of a wider staff team
- A degree in psychology or a related field, HLTA experience, or a background in youth work or care work is welcome, even without formal TA experience
