When a teenager has spent years being sent out of lessons, what would it take for them to choose to walk back in?

I am working with a specialist SEND secondary school in Twickenham that needs a Behaviour Mentor to join as an SEN Teaching Assistant. You support a small group of students in KS3 and KS4 with SEMH needs, Autism, ADHD and associated learning difficulties. Many of them arrive having lost trust in school. Your job is to help them find it again, one day at a time.

Is your current role using what you are best at?

If you work in youth work, care or a mainstream school, you probably already know you are the adult young people open up to. Often, that skill sits inside a role with a large caseload or a class of thirty, and you rarely get to see one young person through. This role gives you a small group and the same students every day, for the whole year. You see the change in them because you are there for it.

About the school and the students

This specialist school supports secondary-aged students whose needs mean they need more structure and consistency than a mainstream setting can give. Classes are small and well-staffed, so you have time to get to know each student properly.

The approach is therapeutic. Staff focus on understanding what sits behind a student’s behaviour, and they get specialist training to support complex needs. The school also works closely with families and outside professionals, so you see the full picture of each young person you support.

The school is commutable from Teddington, Hampton, Kingston and Richmond.

Your role as a Behaviour Mentor

  • Build trusting relationships with a small group of students in KS3 and KS4, acting as a steady adult in their school day
  • Support students in lessons and help them stay engaged with their learning
  • Set clear, calm boundaries and de-escalate situations when students become distressed or dysregulated
  • Support students with SEMH needs, Autism and ADHD, adapting your approach to each student
  • Share what you notice with Teachers and the wider team, so support for each student keeps improving

Who should apply

  • People with experience supporting young people with SEND, SEMH, Autism or ADHD, whether paid or voluntary
  • Youth Workers, Support Workers, Mentors or mainstream Teaching Assistants ready to move into a specialist setting
  • Anyone who stays calm under pressure and can think on their feet when a lesson changes direction
  • People who work well in a team and value consistency with colleagues
  • Graduates in Psychology, Criminology or Education Studies planning a career in teaching, therapy or social work

The school wants the right person in post as soon as possible, and interviews are being arranged now.
