Tower Hamlets | Full-Time | September Start | Interviews from Week Commencing 10th August

Could you be the trusted adult who changes a young person's future?

We're working with an exceptional specialist secondary school in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to recruit a dedicated and resilient Behaviour Mentor to join their team from September.

This is an incredibly rewarding opportunity for someone with a background in youth work, mentoring, behaviour support, social care, education or pastoral care who believes that every behaviour has a reason and every young person deserves someone who won't give up on them.

The school is an all-boys specialist secondary setting supporting students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Through strong relationships, consistency and trauma-informed practice, the school helps young people rebuild confidence, regulate their emotions and re-engage with learning.

Located in Tower Hamlets, the school benefits from excellent transport links via the District Line, DLR and Elizabeth Line, making it easily accessible from across London.

The Role

This is far more than behaviour management.

As a Behaviour Mentor, you'll become a consistent, trusted adult for young people who may have experienced trauma, disrupted education, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) or significant emotional challenges.

You'll work across the school providing 1:1 mentoring, leading restorative conversations, supporting students through moments of crisis and helping them develop the emotional regulation, resilience and decision-making skills needed to succeed.

You'll recognise that behaviour is a form of communication and respond with empathy, patience and clear boundaries, helping students feel understood while maintaining high expectations.

No two days will be the same, but every day offers the opportunity to make a genuine difference.

Your Responsibilities

  • Provide targeted 1:1 mentoring focused on emotional regulation, resilience, self-esteem and positive decision-making.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with young people who may be reluctant to engage with education or adults.
  • Respond calmly to behavioural incidents using trauma-informed, low-arousal de-escalation strategies.
  • Support students through moments of emotional dysregulation, helping them return to learning successfully.
  • Facilitate restorative conversations following conflict, promoting accountability, reflection and positive relationships.
  • Deliver structured interventions focusing on anger management, emotional literacy, conflict resolution and social skills.
  • Support students returning from exclusions, internal reflection spaces or periods of absence, helping them reintegrate positively into school life.
  • Carry out behaviour observations and contribute to individual behaviour support plans, EHCP targets and risk assessments.
  • Maintain accurate behaviour, wellbeing and safeguarding records in line with school procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral teams, safeguarding leads, parents and external professionals to provide consistent support for every young person.

We're Looking For Someone Who

  • Holds a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Youth Work, Mentoring, Social Care, Education or a related field (desirable).
  • Has substantial experience supporting young people with SEMH, Autism, ADHD or challenging behaviour.
  • Has worked within an SEMH school, PRU, Alternative Provision, Residential Care, Youth Offending Service or similar setting.
  • Has experience delivering effective 1:1 mentoring and behaviour interventions.
  • Understands trauma-informed practice, attachment theory and the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
  • Has knowledge of restorative practice, positive behaviour support and emotional regulation strategies.
  • Understands safeguarding risks including child criminal exploitation (CCE), child sexual exploitation (CSE), county lines and contextual safeguarding.
  • Is calm, resilient and emotionally intelligent, even during challenging situations.
  • Can build rapport quickly while maintaining clear, consistent professional boundaries.
  • Has a genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers and reach their full potential.

What Makes This Opportunity Special?

This role is about changing lives through relationships.

For many students, you'll become the trusted adult who listens without judgement, believes in their potential and helps them see a brighter future. Your consistency, patience and encouragement could be the reason a young person returns to learning, develops healthier relationships or begins to believe in themselves again.

You'll be joining a highly supportive, trauma-informed staff team that understands behaviour is communication and is committed to helping every student succeed through compassion, structure and high expectations.

Whether your background is in education, youth work, mentoring, social care, residential care, sports coaching, criminal justice or pastoral support, this is an opportunity to make a lasting difference every single day.
