Understanding the behaviour starts with understanding the child.

When a child finds communication, learning or everyday situations difficult, the right support can make all the difference. It takes patience, consistency and someone willing to look beyond the behaviour to understand what a pupil needs.

Parker Smith Inclusion is working with a specialist SEND setting in Witham looking for a Behaviour Mentor to support children with autism and complex additional needs.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys building strong relationships and helping children develop at their own pace.

What will you be doing?

You'll provide individualised support, helping pupils engage with learning, communicate their needs and develop greater confidence and independence.

Your day could involve:

  • Working 1:1 with pupils, adapting your approach to their needs

  • Supporting children with autism and complex learning needs

  • Following structured routines and individual learning programmes

  • Developing communication, interaction and social skills

  • Helping pupils manage emotions and navigate challenging situations

  • Encouraging independence and practical life skills

  • Working closely with teachers and colleagues to maintain consistent approaches

Every pupil is different, so being observant, adaptable and consistent will be key. You'll need to recognise when something isn't working and understand the importance of responding to each child as an individual.

Who are we looking for?

Experience with autism and individualised support is particularly valuable. We're keen to hear from people with backgrounds in ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis), intensive 1:1 support or specialist SEND provision.

You might have worked as a Behaviour Mentor, ABA Tutor, SEND Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or Autism Support Worker.

Experience working with children is important, although previous school experience isn't essential if you have relevant experience in care, therapy or another support setting.

You'll need to be patient, calm and reliable, with the ability to build trust, follow structured approaches and remain consistent when situations become challenging.

Above all, you'll want to help children make progress, however big or small that progress might look.

What can you expect?

  • £95–£105 per day PAYE, depending on experience

  • Monday–Friday, 8:30am–4:30pm

  • Full-time, long-term work

  • Potential to move into a permanent position

  • No umbrella companies or hidden deductions

  • Support from a recruitment team specialising exclusively in SEND

  • CV advice, career guidance and ongoing placement support

  • 400+ five-star Google reviews from educators
