Not every young person finds school easy. Sometimes, they need someone who looks beyond their behaviour, understands what might be driving it and helps them find a more positive way forward.
Parker Smith Inclusion is proud to be working in partnership with a fantastic school in Chelmsford to recruit a dedicated Behaviour Mentor to join its supportive team.
The school works with both primary and secondary-aged pupils, providing a nurturing and inclusive environment where young people are encouraged to develop confidence, build positive relationships and re-engage with their education.
With a strong emphasis on emotional wellbeing, relationship-building and learning beyond the classroom, this is an opportunity for someone who wants to do more than manage behaviour. You'll help young people recognise their potential, develop essential life skills and make positive steps towards their future.
The Role
As a Behaviour Mentor, you'll work closely with pupils who may struggle with emotional regulation, engagement or behaviour in a traditional classroom environment.
You'll build meaningful relationships, provide consistent support and help young people develop the skills they need to navigate challenges both in school and in the wider community.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting primary and secondary-aged pupils with behavioural, social and emotional needs.
- Building trusting relationships that help pupils feel safe, understood and ready to engage.
- Supporting emotional regulation and encouraging positive approaches to managing difficult situations.
- Using consistent, positive behaviour strategies to help pupils make better choices and develop resilience.
- Working alongside teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals to provide individualised support.
- Encouraging pupils to participate in enrichment activities, including outdoor learning and community-based experiences.
- Helping young people develop communication, teamwork and independent living skills.
- Supporting pupils to re-engage with learning, build confidence and recognise their achievements.
- Maintaining a calm, structured and respectful environment where pupils can succeed.
Every day will bring different challenges, but the opportunity to see a young person grow in confidence, overcome barriers and begin to believe in themselves makes this a genuinely rewarding role.
About You
We're looking for someone who can remain calm when situations become challenging and understands that behaviour is often a form of communication.
You might already have experience as a Behaviour Mentor, Teaching Assistant, Youth Worker or Learning Support Assistant, or have worked in another setting supporting young people.
Ideally, you'll bring:
- Experience supporting children or young people with behavioural, social or emotional needs.
- A patient, empathetic and resilient approach, particularly when working through challenging situations.
- The ability to build positive relationships while maintaining clear boundaries and consistent expectations.
- Confidence supporting emotional regulation and encouraging positive behaviour.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- A genuine passion for inclusion and helping young people overcome barriers to learning.
- A flexible, proactive attitude and a willingness to get involved in activities beyond the classroom.
Most importantly, you'll recognise that progress doesn't always happen overnight. You'll be someone who celebrates the small wins, remains consistent through difficult days and gives young people the opportunity to start afresh.
Why Join This School?
This is an excellent opportunity to join a supportive school where relationship-building, inclusion and personal development are central to the work being done with pupils.
You'll benefit from:
- A long-term opportunity with the potential to secure a permanent position.
- The chance to work across both primary and secondary age groups.
- Opportunities to develop your behaviour support and mentoring skills.
- A varied role incorporating outdoor learning and community-based activities.
- The opportunity to make a meaningful difference to young people's confidence, wellbeing and educational progress.
