Interviews are arranged ASAP!
I am currently working within an SEMH school in Lambeth that needs a Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant to support young people with SEMH and present with emotional dysregulation and behaviours that can be challenging. This is a long-term role leading to a permanent contract, starting after the October half-term.
About the School & Your Role as a Behaviour Support Assistant:
As a Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant, consistency, patience and the ability to build strong relationships are key. You'll need to remain calm under pressure, recognise early signs of distress and step in with the right support before situations escalate.
This is a great opportunity to build meaningful relationships and really get to know their individual needs. While the class teacher leads the learning, you'll play a vital role in helping both pupils feel safe, settled and ready to engage. This could mean supporting them through a lesson, taking a short walk or finding a quiet space to reset before returning to class.
You'll be joining a well-resourced specialist SEMH setting, with plenty of space and resources to support pupils' individual needs. No two days are the same, so flexibility and a positive approach are essential!
You'll also work closely with specialist SEND teachers and a wider multidisciplinary team, with the added opportunity for the role to develop into a permanent position.
What You Will Do:
- Build positive relationships with your pupils by taking the time to understand their individual needs and providing a consistent, reliable presence.
- Develop an understanding of emotional dysregulation and learn how to support pupils to self-regulate, including during challenging moments.
- Maintain calm, consistent boundaries and use effective de-escalation techniques to prevent situations from escalating.
- Work collaboratively with the class teacher and SENCO to adapt learning activities, daily routines and behaviour support plans.
- Encourage pupils to engage with their learning and take part in school life in a positive, supportive and pressure-free way.
- Keep clear, accurate records of incidents and progress, helping the wider team identify what works best for each pupil.
Do You Have What It Takes?
- A genuine passion for supporting children and young people with SEMH needs, behavioural challenges or barriers to learning.
- Experience working with children or young people, particularly those who may display challenging behaviour (whether paid or voluntary).
- The ability to stay calm, composed and reassuring when situations become challenging.
- Confidence in following behaviour support plans and maintaining clear, consistent boundaries.
- An Enhanced Child and Adult DBS on the Update Service, or a willingness to obtain one with our support.
You don't necessarily need previous school-based experience to be successful in this role. We’re just as interested in your attitude, approach and transferable skills. Experience in youth work, care, sports coaching, mentoring or supporting a family member with additional needs can all be incredibly valuable. What matters most is your ability to build relationships, show patience and make a positive difference to young people.
