What would change for a boy if the first adult he saw each morning already knew how his day was likely to go?

I am currently working with a mainstream primary school in North West London that needs a Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant for two boys whose behaviour can be challenging. This is a long-term role leading to a permanent contract, starting after the October half-term.

About the Role

Both boys need the same thing. A consistent adult who stays calm, spots the early signs that a day is going wrong, and steps in before it escalates. You will be that adult.

Your time is shared between the two of them, in class and at key points across the school day. That means you get to know them well and quickly. The class teacher leads the learning. You help both boys stay settled enough to take part. Some days that means sitting beside one of them through a maths lesson. Other days, it means a short walk outside, a quiet space and a reset before going back in.

About the School

This is a well-resourced mainstream primary with generous outdoor space, which matters when a child needs room to calm down. Staff work closely with the SENCO, and the school wants this role to become a permanent part of the team. Commutable from Wembley and Edgware.

What You Will Do

  • Support two boys across lessons and the wider school day, adjusting your time to what each needs
  • Learn what unsettles each boy and what helps him recover
  • Use calm, consistent boundaries and de-escalation when situations build
  • Work with the class teacher and SENCO to adapt tasks, routines and behaviour plans
  • Record incidents and progress clearly so the team can see what is working

About You

  • A genuine interest in behaviour, SEMH or children who find school hard
  • Experience with children or young people with behaviour challenges, paid or voluntary
  • The ability to keep your voice level and your body language calm when a situation escalates
  • Confidence following a behaviour plan the same way, every day
  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one with support

You do not need to have worked in a school before. Experience from youth work, care, sports coaching, mentoring or supporting a family member with additional needs all count.

Training and Support

You will work alongside an experienced class teacher and SENCO from your first week. Parker Smith Inclusion offers free CPD to keep your skills up to date, and there is a clear route from this long-term placement to a permanent contract after two terms.

Where This Role Can Lead

A year supporting two boys every day teaches you how to read behaviour and respond to what sits underneath it. That experience carries straight into teaching, educational psychology, social work and therapy training. It also leads to senior Teaching Assistant and HLTA roles. Psychology, Education and Criminology graduates often use roles like this as their first step into SEND.
