Behaviour Support Worker - Education Setting

Full-time, immediate start (will consider 4 days a week)

£600 - £650 PAYE per week, permanent contract opportunity

What would change for a child with SEMH needs if someone met them where they feel safest, and stayed long enough to earn their trust?

This Behaviour Support Worker post is an outreach role supporting primary-age children with special educational needs, including autism (ASC), ADHD and SEMH. You will visit children in their own homes and meet them in community places such as libraries. You will not be based in a school or a classroom.

It is a full-time post from 8:30am to 4pm, paid at £120 - £130 PAYE per day. The contract is long-term to permanent and starts as soon as possible.

Where the work is

The children live across the Kingston area of South West London, so your days move between homes and local venues. From Mitcham, it is an easy commute by tram to Wimbledon, then a short train ride.

A different way to use your experience

Many people who have supported SEMH pupils in school know the feeling of being pulled between one child who needs you and a whole class who also do. In this role, you work with one child at a time. You get to know them, their family and what helps them stay regulated.

The children

Some children are out of school right now, after a placement has ended or while they wait for a new one. Others still attend but are at risk of exclusion as their behaviour escalates. Each child has their own plan, overseen by a specialist teacher. For many of them, the longer-term goal is a settled return to school.

How the team works

The approach is nurture-based. Behaviour is seen as communication, so you work out what a child is telling you before you respond. You will be part of a wider team of specialist teachers and support staff, alongside families, schools and other professionals.

What you will

  • Meet children one-to-one at home or in community settings, guided by their individual plan
  • Use a calm, consistent, nurture-based approach to help each child feel safe and ready to engage
  • Teach and model emotional regulation strategies that fit the child, and adjust them as you learn what works
  • Keep accurate notes on progress and share them with the specialist teacher leading the case
  • Build a positive working relationship with parents and carers, and support the child’s steps back towards school

About you

  • A real interest in SEND and in understanding children with SEMH needs, autism and ADHD
  • Experience supporting children with SEMH needs in a school setting (this is essential)
  • Steady under pressure, with the patience to let trust build over weeks rather than days
  • Organised and happy to travel between homes and venues on your own
  • Warm, clear communication with children, parents and professionals

Essential and welcome

School SEMH experience is the one essential. Beyond that, the role would suit a teaching assistant, LSA, learning mentor, behaviour mentor or pastoral worker from a mainstream school, a specialist setting, a PRU or alternative provision. If your school SEMH experience is with secondary pupils and you would like to work with younger children, you are welcome to apply.

Why apply

You get time to make real progress with individual children, and a specialist teacher oversees each plan, so you are never working it out alone. Your pay is a clear £130 PAYE per day, paid weekly, with no umbrella deductions.
