Behaviour Support Worker – Specialist SEMH & Autism School
Richmond Upon Thames | September 2025 | £95–£100 per day (PAYE only – no umbrella deductions) | Term Time Only | Full-Time | Monday to Friday
Are you the steady presence a young person needs to feel safe and seen in school?
This isn’t a traditional teaching assistant job, and that’s the point. You’ll be working in a therapeutic, trauma-informed setting that supports pupils aged 9 to 16 who’ve struggled in mainstream education due to Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism, ADHD, and complex backgrounds.
We’re supporting a brilliant, forward-thinking specialist school in Richmond, and we’re looking for Behaviour Support Workers who live in or around Kingston and are ready to make a real difference.
What does a Behaviour Support Worker do?
- Support pupils both in and out of the classroom with emotional regulation and behaviour
- Help create a safe, low-arousal, predictable environment for learning
- Use a calm, relational approach to de-escalate and manage challenging behaviour
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team including therapists, behaviour specialists, and pastoral staff
- Build meaningful, professional relationships with young people who may not trust easily
What kind of person thrives in this role?
- Someone who’s worked with young people with additional needs, mental health difficulties, or trauma
- Someone who sees behaviour as communication, not defiance
- Someone who can stay grounded when others are struggling
- Someone who brings patience, empathy, and emotional resilience to the day-to-day
- Someone considering a long-term career in education, psychology, therapy or youth support
Whether you’ve worked in schools, youth services, mental health support, care, or something similar, if you’re calm, consistent, and want to make a difference, this could be the role for you.
Why join this setting?
- Trauma-informed, therapeutic school culture
- Supportive team with regular CPD and debriefs
- Excellent training in safeguarding, behaviour strategies, and emotional wellbeing
- Genuine career development pathways in an expanding provision
- A warm, child-first environment where relationships come first
