BSL Communication Support Assistant – Give Every Child a Voice | Brent

Location: Brent, North West London
Pay: £92.59–£97.50 per day PAYE
Contract: Full-time | Term-time only
Start Date: ASAP

You don't need to be an experienced teacher to change the way a child experiences the classroom. Sometimes, the ability to communicate is where everything begins.

Do you have a passion for British Sign Language (BSL)? Perhaps you're studying towards your next BSL qualification, considering a career in communication support or looking for an opportunity to put your signing skills into practice?

Parker Smith Inclusion is looking for a BSL Communication Support Assistant to join a welcoming mainstream primary school in Brent.

You'll support pupils across specialist SEND provision and mainstream classrooms, using BSL to help children communicate, participate in lessons and build confidence in their everyday school lives.

This is an opportunity to take something you're interested in and turn it into something genuinely meaningful.

Communication Is at the Heart of Everything

Every child deserves to feel understood, included and able to express themselves.

Working alongside teachers and experienced SEND professionals, you'll help remove communication barriers and make classroom learning more accessible.

Your day could involve:

  • Using BSL to support pupils in understanding lessons, instructions and classroom activities.

  • Providing individual and small-group communication support.

  • Helping children with autism and speech, language and communication needs engage with learning.

  • Encouraging pupils to develop their confidence, independence and communication skills.

  • Supporting participation across specialist SEND provision and mainstream classrooms.

  • Working closely with teachers and support staff to create an inclusive learning environment.

You'll also have the opportunity to develop your signing through regular practical experience in an educational setting.

Could This Be Your Next Opportunity?

We're looking for someone who has a genuine interest in BSL, communication and supporting children with additional needs.

You should have:

  • BSL Level 1, or be currently working towards Level 2.

  • An interest in Deaf awareness, communication and inclusive education.

  • A patient, approachable and supportive personality.

  • The confidence to build positive relationships with children and colleagues.

  • A willingness to learn and develop within a SEND environment.

You don't necessarily need previous classroom experience.

In fact, we're particularly interested in hearing from graduates and aspiring education professionals with backgrounds in:

  • Psychology and Child Psychology.

  • Education and Special Educational Needs.

  • Drama and Performing Arts.

  • Youth Work and Mentoring.

  • British Sign Language and Communication Studies.

If you have the right foundations, enthusiasm and willingness to learn, we'd like to hear from you.

More Than Just a Teaching Assistant Role

For someone interested in BSL, this could be an excellent starting point.

You'll gain practical experience using your signing skills, develop your understanding of Deaf awareness and inclusive education, and learn how communication support can transform a child's experience at school.

Whether you're considering a future in educational support, speech and language, communication or the wider SEND sector, this role offers valuable experience.

What You Can Expect

  • £92.59–£97.50 PAYE per day.

  • Full-time working hours.

  • Term-time-only position.

  • ASAP start – immediate interviews available.

  • Weekly pay.

  • Practical experience developing your BSL skills.

  • Support from experienced education professionals.

  • Dedicated support from a specialist SEND recruitment consultant.
