About the role

For a hearing impaired pupil, effective communication can transform their experience of school — from accessing lessons and joining conversations to building friendships and developing independence.

The setting

This inclusive primary school supports children aged 4–11 and has a dedicated Hearing Impairment Provision supporting pupils across both specialist and mainstream environments.

Pupils may use a range of communication approaches, including BSL, SSE, spoken English and written English. The school also supports children with a range of additional SEND needs.

You will work alongside experienced teachers and specialist support staff to help pupils access learning and participate fully in school life.

The role

You will:

Support hearing impaired pupils across classroom environments
Use BSL, SSE and other communication approaches where appropriate
Help pupils access lessons, activities and wider school experiences
Support communication between pupils, teachers and peers
Encourage social interaction, confidence and independence
Promote deaf awareness and inclusive communication
Work collaboratively with teachers and specialist support staff
Adapt your approach to meet individual communication needs

Who we are looking for

You will ideally have:

Basic or developing BSL skills
A patient, empathetic and supportive approach
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
A genuine interest in deaf education and SEND
The ability to build positive relationships with children
Confidence working as part of a wider team

Previous experience in schools, Hearing Impairment Provision or specialist SEND is beneficial but not essential.

This role could also suit someone looking to progress towards a career in deaf education, SEN teaching, speech and language or specialist SEND support.
