It is worth asking whether your current role allows you to work with each pupil in the way they actually need, rather than fitting them into a fixed timetable and a room they may not want to be in.
This Outreach SEN HLTA role is within a well-established organisation that works across Kingston and neighbouring areas, including Surbiton and New Malden. Rather than being based in a single school, you will travel to pupils in their homes and community locations, such as libraries, delivering planned lessons and interventions where the pupil actually is. The organisation takes a graduated approach, offering lighter support at first and stepping up when a pupil needs more, and it stays closely involved with schools and families to ensure the provision remains consistent. It has a genuinely strong reputation for the quality of its work, built on putting children first and treating every family as a real partner rather than a case number. You will support primary and secondary-age pupils with autism (ASC), ADHD, specific learning difficulties (SpLD) and social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), many of whom have found it hard to engage with school so far.
In this role, you will:
- Travel to pupils' homes and community locations across Kingston and the surrounding area to deliver planned lessons and interventions
- Support pupils with ASC, ADHD, SpLD and SEMH to manage their emotions and re-engage with learning
- Adapt your planning day to day based on each pupil's needs and the setting you are working in
- Work closely with school staff, families and other professionals to keep support aligned with each pupil's plan
- Build calm, trusting relationships with pupils who may have had a difficult experience of school in the past
About you:
- Personal interest in SEND and helping pupils who have struggled to engage with mainstream education
- At least one year of experience working in a school setting is essential for this role
- Confidence in planning and delivering lessons on your own initiative
- An HLTA qualification or equivalent hands-on classroom experience
