Complex Needs Learning Support Assistant – Specialist SEND School
Location: Havering
Pay: £95 per day (PAYE)
Contract: Temporary to Permanent
Start Date: ASAP
We're recruiting a Learning Support Assistant for a specialist SEND school in Havering, supporting children with complex additional needs.
This role would suit someone who enjoys working with children, understands that every pupil communicates and responds differently, and is comfortable helping with both learning and everyday care.
You don't need to have worked in a specialist school before. What matters is how you approach the role, how you respond when a child is struggling, and your willingness to learn from the staff around you.
What does the role involve?
You'll work alongside teachers and other support staff, helping pupils throughout the school day. Some of the work will be classroom-based, while other parts will focus on communication, personal care and helping pupils manage their daily routines.
This could include:
-
Helping pupils take part in lessons and activities in a way that works for them
-
Supporting communication and interaction with other pupils
-
Encouraging independence with everyday tasks
-
Helping pupils when they become overwhelmed, distressed or dysregulated
-
Following individual support plans and guidance from the school team
-
Assisting with personal care, including hygiene and toileting where required
Personal care is a key part of this position, so you must be comfortable providing this support respectfully and sensitively.
Who might suit this role?
You may already have experience in a school, care home, residential setting or support role. Equally, you might be looking to move into SEND from another line of work.
We're interested in people who can be patient without being passive, follow guidance, and stay calm when a situation doesn't go to plan. Working with children with complex needs can be demanding, and consistency matters just as much on a difficult day as it does on a good one.
You don't need to know everything from day one, but you do need to be open to learning, comfortable working as part of a team and prepared for the practical side of the job.
The school
The school has purpose-built facilities, including specialist classrooms, sensory spaces and adapted areas to support its pupils.
You'll be working alongside staff who understand the needs of the children and can guide you through the routines, expectations and approaches used within the setting.
