Complex Needs Teaching Assistant – Camden

Autism & Communication Support | £95–£110 per day | Full-time

Not every pupil will show you progress in the same way.

For one pupil, progress might be independently completing part of their morning routine.

For another, it might be communicating a choice, remaining regulated through a transition or engaging with an activity for a little longer than yesterday.

We are looking for a Complex Needs Teaching Assistant to support pupils within a SEND setting in Camden.

This is a role for someone who can look beyond traditional measures of achievement and recognise the importance of communication, independence, engagement and emotional regulation.

The role

You will work alongside teachers and specialist staff to support pupils who require additional help to access education.

Your day could involve:

  • Supporting pupils with autism and additional learning needs

  • Providing individual and small-group support

  • Helping pupils communicate their needs and choices

  • Supporting sensory and emotional regulation

  • Using visual communication and structured routines

  • Breaking learning into manageable, meaningful steps

  • Supporting pupils during transitions throughout the school day

  • Encouraging independence and life skills

  • Working closely with teachers and other professionals

This is a hands-on SEND role where building trust and understanding each pupil's communication style will be just as important as supporting academic learning.

What are we looking for?

Essential

  • Experience supporting children, young people or vulnerable individuals

  • Patience and emotional resilience

  • The ability to communicate clearly and adapt your approach

  • A willingness to learn about different communication and sensory needs

  • Reliability and consistency

  • Availability for full-time work

Desirable

Experience with any of the following would be particularly useful:

  • Autism / ASC

  • Complex needs

  • SLD

  • Communication difficulties

  • Sensory needs

  • SEND schools

  • Personal care

  • PECS, Makaton or other communication approaches

We would also welcome applicants from care, support work, youth work and other relevant backgrounds who are interested in moving into specialist education.

The person matters

Some of the best Complex Needs Teaching Assistants are not the people trying to fill every silence or rush a pupil onto the next task.

They notice.

They give pupils processing time.

They recognise when someone is becoming overwhelmed.

They understand that communication does not always involve spoken language.

And, importantly, they remain consistent enough for pupils to begin trusting them.

If that sounds like the way you naturally work with young people, this could be a very good fit.

Pay and working pattern

£95–£110 per day, depending on experience

Full-time | Monday to Friday
