Some people just know how wood behaves under a plane, why a joint fails, and how a design looks right on paper and falls apart in your hands. Not everyone can teach that. The ones who can usually learn it by doing it, not by studying it.

At some point, a young person looked at something they had made and felt genuinely proud of it. If you were the person who helped make that moment happen, you already know what this work asks of you.

You probably also know the frustration of being measured by a certificate rather than by what you can actually do. This school in Mole Valley, Surrey, is more interested in what you bring to the room. If you do not yet hold QTS, they will support you through the Assessment Only route. If you do, you will be valued for it. Either way, the conversation starts with your experience, not your paperwork.

This is a permanent Design and Technology Teacher position at a specialist school in Mole Valley, Surrey. The school supports pupils aged 7 to 16 with Autism, ADHD, and Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. Every pupil holds an Education, Health and Care Plan. No two pupils are the same, and the curriculum reflects that. Lessons are planned around individual needs, not delivered to a whole class at the same time.

Resistant materials is the core specialism for this role. You will plan and deliver DT sessions that are purposeful, practical, and adapted to the pupils in front of you. You will work alongside teachers, therapists, and support staff who are all focused on the same goal: helping each young person build confidence, independence, and skills that they will carry into adulthood.

The Salary

If you hold QTS, your salary can be up to £45,000 per annum.

If you do not yet hold QTS but have strong subject knowledge and relevant hands-on experience, the school can support you through the Assessment Only route to QTS. The salary in that case is up to £35,000 per annum while you work towards your qualification. The Assessment Only route is not a training programme. It is a recognition route, designed for people who can already demonstrate the Teachers' Standards in practice.

Who This Role Suits

This role is well-suited to people coming from practical or technical backgrounds who are ready to lead a classroom. You may be:

  • A workshop or DT technician who has been supporting lessons and is ready to take the next step
  • A product designer, furniture maker, or craftsperson with experience of working with young people
  • Someone already teaching DT in a school without QTS, looking for a setting that will invest in you
  • A graduate with a design or engineering background and experience of working with children or young people with SEND

What matters as much as your technical knowledge is your ability to build a relationship with a young person who may have had a difficult experience of school. Pupils here respond to adults who are calm, consistent, and genuinely interested in them. If you can hold that space while teaching resistant materials to a high standard, this school wants to hear from you.
