Family Liaison Officer – SEMH

Location: Tower Hamlets
Contract: Full-time
Salary: £150 - £170 per day
Start Date: Immediate

Are you passionate about supporting young people and families who may be facing barriers to education? Do you have experience building positive relationships with parents, carers and external professionals?

We are working with a specialist education setting in East London to recruit a dedicated Family Liaison Officer to support students with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who can act as a key link between home and school, helping families feel supported, improving engagement and ensuring young people receive the right support to access their education.

The Role

As Family Liaison Officer, you will work closely with students, parents and carers, school staff and external agencies to strengthen relationships and promote positive outcomes. You will help identify and address barriers to attendance, support families through challenging circumstances and encourage consistent engagement with education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build trusting and positive relationships with parents, carers and families.
  • Act as a key point of contact between home, school and external agencies.
  • Support strategies to improve attendance, punctuality and engagement.
  • Carry out welfare checks and home visits where required.
  • Support students and families through challenging situations using a trauma-informed and relational approach.
  • Use restorative approaches and Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) principles to support positive relationships and resolve conflict.
  • Deliver targeted one-to-one and small-group interventions.
  • Support students returning to school following periods of absence or disengagement.
  • Assist with admissions, induction and transition processes.
  • Maintain accurate records, case notes, reports and student support plans.
  • Work collaboratively with safeguarding, pastoral and inclusion teams, as well as external professionals.
  • Act as a keyworker for identified students and support their individual needs.
  • Support the development and review of EHCP information, learner profiles and relevant safety plans.
  • Promote positive communication and partnership working between families and the school.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will:

  • Have experience working with vulnerable young people and families, ideally within an SEMH, education, youth work or family support setting.
  • Be confident building relationships with parents and carers, including where engagement may initially be challenging.
  • Understand the barriers that can affect school attendance and family engagement.
  • Have a trauma-informed, empathetic and non-judgemental approach.
  • Have knowledge of restorative practice and Non-Violent Resistance (NVR), or a willingness to develop this.
  • Be confident communicating with external agencies and professionals.
  • Have strong organisation, administration and record-keeping skills.
  • Be resilient, approachable and able to remain calm in challenging situations.
  • Be willing to undertake home visits and work flexibly to meet the needs of students and families.
  • Have a good understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries.

Experience in family liaison, family support, attendance, pastoral care, youth work or social care would be particularly valuable.

Why Apply?

This is an opportunity to make a genuine difference to young people and their families, helping to strengthen relationships, overcome barriers to education and create more positive experiences of school.

If you are passionate about supporting families and helping young people with SEMH needs achieve positive outcomes, we would love to hear from you.
