Food Tech Teacher
Location: London
Pay: £201.01 - £298.05 PAYE Daily Rate
Job Type: Full time, term time only, Temp to Perm
Start Date: ASAP
About the role
For some young people, a practical lesson can be the first time in a school day that they feel genuinely capable.
It might be successfully preparing a meal. Learning how to use a kitchen utensils safely. Understanding why certain ingredients react when they are cooked. Sitting down at the end of a lesson and looking at something they have created themselves.
For pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, these moments can mean far more than learning how to cook. They can build confidence, independence, resilience and a sense that they are capable of achieving something.
A specialist education setting in London is looking for an inspiring Food Technology Teacher who understands that great teaching is about much more than delivering a curriculum. It is about creating opportunities for young people to succeed, particularly those who may have previously struggled to find their place in education.
The setting
The setting supports young people with SEMH needs and provides an environment where individual needs, wellbeing and personal development are taken seriously.
The school is committed to creating safe, nurturing and inclusive learning environments where pupils are encouraged to understand themselves, develop positive behaviours and build the skills they need for their future.
As a Food Technology Teacher, you will become an important part of that journey.
The role
You will plan and deliver engaging Food Technology lessons that combine practical cooking with meaningful theory.
Your lessons will cover everything from nutrition and food preparation to food science, hygiene and safety, while giving pupils the opportunity to develop genuine culinary skills.
You will adapt lessons carefully around the individual needs of your pupils, finding different ways to engage students who may struggle with traditional classroom learning.
The kitchen will become more than just a classroom. It will be a place where pupils can experiment, make decisions, solve problems, work as part of a team and experience the satisfaction of creating something themselves.
You will demonstrate practical cooking techniques, supervise pupils during practical sessions and ensure that the kitchen remains a safe, organised and positive environment.
You will also assess progress, use assessment information to inform your planning and set meaningful personalised targets for your pupils.
Who this is for
This role would suit an experienced Food Technology Teacher who is passionate about working with young people who need something different from mainstream education.
You will need to be creative enough to adapt your lessons, patient enough to understand that progress is not always immediate, and consistent enough to provide pupils with the stability they need.
Most importantly, you will see the young person before you see the behaviour.
You will understand that a pupil refusing to participate may not simply be being difficult. They may be anxious, overwhelmed, lacking confidence or afraid of getting something wrong.
The best person for this role will be someone who can turn those moments into opportunities for connection and learning.
You will also work closely with teachers, pastoral staff, support teams, therapists and external professionals to ensure that each pupil receives the right support.
What you will bring
You will have strong knowledge of Food Technology and practical cooking skills, alongside a genuine commitment to inclusive education.
You will be confident teaching both theory and practical lessons and understand the importance of food hygiene, health and safety.
Experience working with pupils with SEMH needs would be highly valuable, but above all, the school is looking for someone who is willing to understand each pupil as an individual.
You will be someone who sets high expectations while recognising that every pupil may need a different route to reach them.
Why this role matters
A successful Food Technology lesson can teach a young person far more than what is written on the curriculum.
It can teach them patience when something does not work the first time.
It can teach them responsibility when they are trusted with equipment.
It can teach them independence when they prepare something without help.
It can teach them resilience when a recipe goes wrong and they try again.
And sometimes, it can simply give a young person a reason to feel proud of themselves.
For pupils who may have spent years being told what they cannot do, giving them the opportunity to create something with their own hands can be incredibly powerful.
This is an opportunity to use your subject expertise to make a genuine difference to young people's lives.
If you are a Food Technology Teacher who wants your lessons to have an impact beyond the classroom, this could be the opportunity you have been looking for.
If this sounds like the role for you, get in touch today.
