Food Technology Teacher

Location: West Drayton, West London
Salary: £201.01 - £298.05 per day PAYE
Job Type: Full time, Temp to Perm
Start Date: September 2026

About the role

What if the subject you teach could give a young person more than a qualification?

For some students, practical learning can be the point where school finally starts to make sense.

A lesson where they can create something, see a result and leave knowing they have achieved something with their own hands can build confidence in a way that traditional classroom learning sometimes cannot.

A specialist SEMH secondary school in West Drayton is looking for an enthusiastic Food Technology Teacher to join its team from September.

This is an opportunity for a qualified teacher to teach a practical, engaging subject while helping young people develop confidence, independence and valuable skills for life beyond school.

The setting

The school supports young people aged 11–19 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs within a specialist secondary environment.

The school places strong emphasis on relationships, respect, personal development and helping students overcome barriers to learning.

Class sizes are small, allowing teachers to understand individual pupils and adapt their teaching accordingly.

The school has dedicated specialist facilities, including practical Design and Technology spaces, alongside a broad curriculum and wider support designed around the needs of its pupils.

The role

As a Food Technology Teacher, you will:

  • Plan and deliver engaging Food Technology lessons

  • Teach practical and theory-based elements of the subject

  • Adapt lessons to meet individual SEND and SEMH needs

  • Create a calm, structured and purposeful learning environment

  • Build positive relationships with pupils

  • Encourage confidence, independence and resilience

  • Assess and monitor student progress

  • Maintain high expectations for learning and behaviour

  • Support students to develop practical life skills

  • Work closely with colleagues to provide consistent support

  • Contribute to the wider curriculum and personal development of pupils

Your lessons will have a clear practical purpose, helping students develop skills that they can use both inside and outside the classroom.

Who we are looking for

This role would suit a qualified teacher with QTS and experience teaching Food Technology, Design Technology or a closely related subject.

You may already have experience within a specialist SEND, SEMH or alternative provision setting.

Alternatively, you could be an experienced mainstream teacher looking for a role where relationships, individual progress and practical learning are at the centre of your teaching.

You will be:

  • Qualified to teach in the UK with QTS

  • Confident teaching Food Technology or a related subject

  • Patient and emotionally intelligent

  • Creative and adaptable

  • Confident managing behaviour

  • Able to establish clear boundaries and expectations

  • Skilled at differentiating lessons

  • A strong communicator

  • Committed to inclusive education

  • Able to build positive relationships with young people

Experience working with SEMH, SEND, challenging behaviour or pupils who have struggled within mainstream education would be advantageous.

Why this role matters

For some young people, confidence comes from achieving something tangible.

It might be preparing a meal independently.

It might be learning a new technique.

It might be producing something they are proud to take home.

Or it might simply be staying focused, completing the task and realising that they are capable of succeeding.

Food Technology gives you the opportunity to create those moments every day.

The right teacher does not just teach a student how to cook.

They can help a young person discover that they are capable of learning, creating and achieving.

Interested?

You do not need to have worked in a specialist SEMH school before.

If you are a qualified teacher with the right attitude, strong classroom practice and a genuine belief in what young people can achieve, this could be an excellent next step.

Interviews are taking place now, so early applications are encouraged.
