Graduate SEN Teaching Assistant - Long-Term to Permanent - South West London
£93 – £98 per day PAYE (£18,135 – £19,110 per annum equivalent) Full-time, term-time only, 8:30am – 4pm. ASAP and September 2026 start available
There is a point, not long after graduating, where you realise that understanding people and actually being in a position to help them are two very different things. You chose your degree because human behaviour genuinely interested you. You wanted to understand why people struggle, how early experiences shape development, and what good support actually looks like. What you did not expect was how hard it would be to find a role that puts any of that to use. This role does.
The school
This is a specialist SEND school in South West London supporting children and young people aged 4 to 19 with severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties, and Autism. Many pupils are non-verbal or have very limited verbal communication. The curriculum is built around each individual, not a fixed academic framework, which means every day you are asked to observe, think, and adapt. The environment is genuinely warm. This is a school where staff are known by name, where no one disappears into a corridor and is forgotten, and where the relationships between adults are as carefully considered as those between adults and pupils. People join, and they stay. That tells you something about how the place feels to work in.
Class groups are small. You will work closely alongside teachers, therapists, and specialist support staff every day. Training is ongoing and built into the school's rhythm rather than bolted on as an afterthought. If you are coming from outside a school setting, you will be supported properly from the start.
The role
- Supporting pupils with SLD, PMLD, and ASC across a full school day
- Building consistent, trusting relationships with individual pupils
- Assisting with personal care as part of the daily routine
- Supporting pupils during hydrotherapy sessions
- Working closely with teachers, therapists, and specialist support staff
- Helping pupils develop communication, independence, and confidence
Who this suits
Psychology, criminology, sociology, education, and other relevant degree backgrounds are all welcome. You do not need prior school experience. What matters is that you are genuinely curious about people, that you can stay calm under pressure, and that you understand why consistency matters for children who find the world unpredictable.
If you have studied human behaviour and want to work somewhere that actually uses that knowledge, this is worth your time.
