Parker Smith Inclusion is proud to be working in partnership with a forward-thinking all-through PRU in Harlow to appoint an exceptional Head of English. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced and passionate English specialist to take on a leadership role where you can shape curriculum, inspire staff, and make a profound difference to the lives of young people who require additional support to succeed.

This expanding PRU supports students across KS3 and KS4 who may have experienced barriers to mainstream education. The setting provides a structured, nurturing, and highly supportive environment where strong relationships, consistency, and personalised learning are central to student progress.

As Head of English, you will lead the strategic development of English across the provision, ensuring high-quality teaching, strong outcomes, and a curriculum that re-engages learners and builds confidence in literacy, communication, and self-expression.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop, and oversee the English curriculum across KS3 and KS4, ensuring it is engaging, accessible, and tailored to meet diverse learner needs.
  • Plan and deliver high-quality, creative, and student-centred English lessons that inspire engagement and promote academic progress.
  • Support students in developing essential literacy, communication, and analytical skills to help them achieve qualifications and future pathways.
  • Monitor progress, track attainment, and implement targeted interventions to support individual student development.
  • Line manage and support English teaching staff, providing coaching, guidance, and professional development where needed.
  • Promote a culture of high expectations, inclusion, and positive behaviour across the department.
  • Work collaboratively with senior leaders, pastoral teams, and external professionals to ensure a holistic approach to student support.
  • Contribute to whole-school development, policy implementation, and strategic planning as part of the leadership team.

About You

To thrive in this role, you will bring:

  • QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and strong experience teaching English at secondary level.
  • Proven ability or readiness to take on departmental or subject leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience working with, or a strong commitment to supporting, students with SEMH needs or those disengaged from mainstream education.
  • A compassionate, resilient, and adaptable teaching approach.
  • Strong leadership, organisational, and communication skills.
  • A genuine passion for inclusion and helping young people overcome barriers to learning.

What’s On Offer

  • Salary: M1 to UPS2 (depending on experience) + leadership responsibility
  • Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, term-time only
