For many autistic pupils, maths is the one subject that makes sense when nothing else does. Clear rules. A right answer. No hidden social code to decipher.
For pupils carrying ADHD or SEMH, it can be the opposite: a subject that has become tangled up with every time they were told they got it wrong, until the anxiety shows up before the maths does.
A Head of Maths who understands both of those pupils and can build a department around them is exactly what this school in Mole Valley, Surrey, needs from September.
The School
This is a specialist independent school supporting pupils aged 7 to 16 with Autism, ADHD, and Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. Many arrive here after previous schools could not provide the pace, patience, or structure they needed. Confidence has usually taken a hit long before they reach this door.
Maths, taught with real skill, is one of the fastest ways to restore some of that confidence. This school wants someone at the head of the department who leads with that in mind, not just someone who can manage a curriculum.
The Role
You would be given genuine ownership of how maths is taught here, not a fixed scheme to administer. Class sizes are small. Adult-to-pupil ratios are high. You would have room to actually know where each pupil is starting from, rather than working from a guess.
Day to day, that means:
- Shaping a maths curriculum built around where pupils actually are, not where a syllabus assumes they should be
- Leading and developing a small Maths team, and working closely with pastoral and therapy staff around individual pupils
- Managing behaviour and anxiety in the room as part of teaching maths, not as a separate problem to solve
- Reporting progress to senior leadership and having a real say in whole-school thinking on teaching and pupil wellbeing
What You Will Need
Qualified Teacher Status is essential.
If you are already a Head of Maths, this is a chance to lead a department built specifically around SEND, rather than retrofitting a mainstream approach to fit. If you are an experienced Maths Teacher who has not yet led a department but knows you are ready, your subject knowledge and your commitment to SEND pupils matter more here than your job title so far.
Prior SEND experience is useful but not the deciding factor. What this school needs is someone who will stay patient with a pupil on their fourth attempt at the same problem, and mean it.
Salary and Contract
- Salary: up to £60,000 per annum, depending on experience
- Contract: full-time, permanent
- Term-time only
