Trauma-informed SEMH HLTA - ASAP Start - South East London
£100 - £115 PAYE per day, paid weekly | Full-time | Long-term to permanent
Could you be the steady adult an anxious child learns to trust again?
You may already be that person for someone, a young person you mentor or a child who always finds you.
The role
I am working with a SEN school, that needs a trauma-informed SEMH Teaching Assistant. You would be supporting students from KS1 - KS5, with autism, ADHD and SEMH needs, where many pupils arrive anxious and wary of adults after hard experiences elsewhere.
What progress looks like
Throughout the day, you support pupils with a range of emotional, social, communication and learning needs, recognising that distress and behaviours that challenge may reflect unmet needs or past experiences.
Working alongside the class team, you provide individualised support to develop emotional regulation, resilience, independence and positive relationships, using patience, reassurance and clear boundaries.
These moments may seem small, but helping a pupil feel safe, build trust and manage their emotions can represent significant progress.
Your day-to-day
- Provide interventions and support the class teacher in their absence
- Be a familiar, consistent face for pupils from KS1 to KS4
- Keep routines calm, so pupils know what comes next
- Help pupils manage anxiety and rejoin learning at their own pace
- Work with Teachers and therapists on EHCP targets
- Notice and record the small steps each pupil makes
About you
- A genuine interest in SEND, SEMH or young people’s mental health
- Proven background delivering interventions, and covering lessons for class teacher
- Abilty to support and implement Maths, English and additiaonl subjects.
- Calm and patient when a child is having a hard day
- Experience with children or young people, paid or voluntary
- Ideal for graduates heading towards teaching or psychology
- Care, youth work or mainstream TA experience counts too
Where this leads
It is long-term to permanent, so you see the change in your pupils for yourself. You also build the SEMH experience, psychology, and teacher-training courses that you look for.
