Some children arrive at the point of referral after a long time, when things haven't quite been working. A mainstream classroom that could not flex enough. A support plan that was well-meaning but not right for them. A series of incidents has left the school unsure what to try next. By the time an outreach tutor is involved, the stakes are real. Another placement breakdown. Another child was pushed further from education.
You already understand this. You have seen it. And if you are honest, part of the reason you are reading this advert is that you want to be doing more of the work that actually moves things, not less.
A well-established organisation in both Kingston and Richmond is recruiting an experienced HLTA to join their outreach team. The service supports children and young people in mainstream primary and secondary schools across both boroughs, working with pupils who are at risk of exclusion, disengaged, or whose needs are not being met within their current setting.
This is a peripatetic role. You will travel across Kingston and Richmond, going into schools, assessing referred pupils, and planning and delivering your own targeted intervention sessions. There is no class teacher in the room with you. You are the specialist. You manage your own caseload, work alongside school staff to develop strategies that last beyond your involvement, and report back to an experienced, collaborative team.
The pupils you support will have Autism or ASC, ADHD, or SEMH needs. Many will have EHC Plans. Most will have had a difficult time in a mainstream setting before you meet them. You will need to build trust quickly, read behaviour accurately, and adjust your approach across different ages, different schools, and different situations, often on the same day.
This is varied, demanding, and genuinely meaningful work. The team around you knows the sector well, takes the work seriously, and will support you properly.
What the role involves:
- Peripatetic outreach across mainstream primary and secondary schools in Kingston and Richmond
- Assessment of referred pupils and independent planning of targeted intervention sessions
- Delivery of one-to-one and small group support for pupils with Autism/ASC, ADHD, and SEMH needs
- Collaborative work with school staff to build sustainable inclusion strategies
- Caseload management and written reporting to the wider team
- Supporting pupils at risk of exclusion or placement breakdown
What you will need:
- Minimum one year of direct classroom experience in a school setting
- Direct experience working with children with Autism/ASC, ADHD, and SEMH
- Confidence in planning and delivering sessions independently
- Good working knowledge of the National Curriculum
- Strong communication skills across different age groups and settings
Experienced HLTAs, specialist SEN teaching assistants, and unqualified teachers with solid SEND experience are all encouraged to apply. If you have relevant experience from a different background and a genuine understanding of the needs these children present with, we want to hear from you.
