About the School

Some schools have therapy teams. This school has a therapeutic culture.

Supporting pupils aged 3 to 19 with a wide range of complex needs including autism, severe and profound learning difficulties, Down's syndrome, complex medical needs, and speech, language and communication difficulties, the school places communication at the heart of everything it does.

Therapists are highly valued members of the school community and play a central role in helping pupils access learning, build relationships, increase independence, and achieve meaningful outcomes. Collaboration is not simply encouraged here, it is embedded into everyday practice.

This is a school where your clinical expertise will be listened to, respected, and acted upon.

About the Role

As the school's Lead Speech and Language Therapist, you will join a well-established multidisciplinary team comprising Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Therapy Assistants, and Creative Arts Therapists.

Alongside managing your own specialist caseload, you will take a leadership role in developing communication practice across the school, supporting colleagues, mentoring junior therapists, and ensuring pupils receive outstanding therapeutic provision.

Key responsibilities include:

Delivering specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessment and intervention for pupils with complex SEND

Leading on dysphagia assessment, management, and safe eating and drinking practices throughout the school

Developing personalised communication programmes and evidence-based interventions

Completing EHCP assessments, annual reviews, and detailed professional reports

Coaching, training, and supporting education staff to embed communication strategies into daily practice

Providing supervision and mentorship to junior members of the Speech and Language Therapy team

Contributing to service development and continuous improvement initiatives

Working collaboratively within the MDT to ensure integrated and holistic support for every pupil

This is an opportunity to influence far more than individual therapy sessions. It is an opportunity to shape practice, develop colleagues, and help create a communication rich environment where every child has the best possible chance to succeed.

To be successful, you'll need:

HCPC registration as a Speech and Language Therapist

Experience working at Band 6 or Band 7 level within paediatrics, SEN, complex needs, or specialist education

Strong knowledge and practical experience of dysphagia assessment and management

Experience contributing to EHCP processes and multidisciplinary planning

Excellent clinical reasoning and decision making skills

Confidence supporting, mentoring, and developing less experienced clinicians

A genuine passion for improving outcomes for children and young people with SEND

What You'll Get

NHS Band 7 Outer London salary

Permanent, full time, term time only position

A highly collaborative multidisciplinary environment

Dedicated CPD, specialist training, and ongoing professional development

Opportunities to lead projects and contribute to service innovation

Supportive leadership that values clinical expertise and professional autonomy

Why This Role Matters

For the children and young people in this school, communication can unlock every aspect of life. It can help them build friendships, access education, express choices, develop independence, and participate more fully in the world around them.

The therapist appointed to this role will do far more than deliver interventions. They will help shape a culture where every pupil's voice matters and where communication is recognised as the foundation for inclusion, learning, and lifelong opportunity.

If you're looking for a role that combines specialist clinical practice, leadership responsibility, and genuine purpose, we'd love to hear from you.
