Join this SEMH Primary School Team in Chelmsford – Learning Support Assistant
Location: Chelmsford
Pay: £95–£115 per day (PAYE, depending on experience)
Contract: Full-time, term-time only
At Parker Smith Inclusion, we believe recruitment is about more than simply filling vacancies — it’s about finding the right people for the right schools, where they can make a genuine and lasting impact. We are currently working in close partnership with an outstanding SEMH primary school in the Chelmsford area and are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to join their supportive and highly skilled team.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting children with social, emotional and mental health needs and who wants to play a meaningful role in helping pupils overcome barriers to learning, develop confidence and achieve their full potential.
About the School
This specialist SEMH primary school provides a nurturing, structured and highly supportive environment for pupils who require additional help with emotional regulation, behaviour and engagement with learning. Staff work collaboratively to create a safe space where children feel understood, valued and encouraged to succeed.
The school offers exceptional facilities that support both academic progress and personal development. These include outdoor learning spaces and Forest School provision, allowing pupils to benefit from hands-on, experiential learning that promotes wellbeing, resilience and social development. No two days are the same, and creativity and flexibility are actively encouraged.
Some pupils also access residential provision during the week, which allows staff to build strong, consistent relationships and support long-term personal growth. The school takes pride in its holistic approach, supporting every aspect of a child’s development — academically, socially and emotionally.
The leadership team is highly supportive and places strong emphasis on staff wellbeing, professional development and teamwork. You will be joining a setting where your contribution is valued and where ongoing learning and development are part of the culture.
The Role: Learning Support Assistant
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting pupils both in and out of the classroom. You will work closely with teachers and other professionals to provide tailored support that enables children to access learning, manage their emotions and develop positive relationships.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs
- Assisting pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour and engagement with learning
- Supporting classroom activities and adapting learning tasks to meet individual needs
- Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils to help them feel safe and supported
- Encouraging independence, resilience and self-confidence
- Supporting outdoor learning, enrichment activities and therapeutic approaches where appropriate
- Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists and pastoral staff to ensure consistent support
- Helping to maintain a calm, structured and nurturing learning environment
- Supporting transitions throughout the school day, including arrival, break times and departures
This is a hands-on, rewarding role where patience, empathy and consistency are key.
About You
We are looking for someone who is committed, caring and motivated to make a real difference in the lives of children with additional needs.
You will ideally have:
- Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, SEND or behavioural needs (school-based or similar settings)
- A calm, patient and empathetic approach
- Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to act as a positive role model
- Confidence supporting behaviour and emotional wellbeing
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Resilience, adaptability and a proactive attitude
- A genuine passion for inclusive education and pupil development
A background in education, youth work, care, mentoring or similar supportive roles would be beneficial, but most important is your commitment to supporting children and helping them succeed.
