Learning Support Assistant – SEND | Barnet
Barnet, North London
Learning Support Assistant / SEN Teaching Assistant / SEND Teaching Assistant
Full-time | Term-time
If you’re looking for a Learning Support Assistant role where you can build genuine relationships with pupils and become an important part of their school experience, this could be a great next step.
Parker Smith Inclusion is working with schools across Barnet looking for Learning Support Assistants to support children and young people with additional needs. Opportunities can include both specialist SEND settings and inclusive mainstream schools.
You could be supporting pupils who need additional help with their learning, communication, emotional regulation, independence or engagement with school. The most important thing is being consistent, patient and able to understand that every pupil communicates and learns differently.
What does the role involve?
As a Learning Support Assistant, you may be:
-
Supporting pupils individually and within small groups
-
Helping pupils access lessons and remain engaged in their learning
-
Providing calm and consistent support when a pupil is finding something difficult
-
Supporting communication, social interaction and independence
-
Working alongside teachers and other education professionals
-
Helping to create a safe and structured learning environment
-
Building positive, professional relationships with the pupils you support
-
Following individual support plans and school safeguarding procedures
Depending on the setting, roles may involve working with pupils with a range of SEND. Specific needs will always be discussed with you before you are put forward for a position.
What are schools looking for?
Essential:
-
A genuine interest in supporting children or young people with additional needs
-
A patient, reliable and consistent approach
-
Strong communication skills
-
The ability to build appropriate professional relationships with pupils
-
A commitment to safeguarding and promoting children's welfare
Desirable:
-
Previous experience as a Learning Support Assistant, SEN Teaching Assistant, SEND Teaching Assistant or Teaching Assistant
-
Experience supporting children or young people with SEND
-
Experience from youth work, care, sports coaching, tutoring, mentoring or similar settings
-
Relevant education, psychology, childcare, SEND or health and social care qualifications
You do not necessarily need years of classroom experience. For the right schools, transferable experience and the right approach can be equally valuable.
Why consider a Learning Support Assistant role?
For many people, this is a chance to do something far more personal than simply helping with schoolwork.
You can become the familiar adult who helps a pupil settle into the day, communicate what they need, manage a difficult moment or achieve something they previously found challenging.
It can also provide valuable experience if you are considering a future career within teaching, psychology, therapy, social work, educational psychology or SEND.
