Learning Support Assistant – SEND | Camden

Camden, North London
Learning Support Assistant / SEN Teaching Assistant / SEND Teaching Assistant
Full-time | Term-time

Some pupils need more than someone sitting beside them in a classroom. They need an adult who can understand what is making learning difficult, build trust and gradually help them become more confident and independent.

Parker Smith Inclusion is recruiting Learning Support Assistants across Camden to work within schools supporting children and young people with additional needs.

These roles can suit experienced SEN Teaching Assistants as well as people who have developed relevant skills through areas such as youth work, care, mentoring, coaching, tutoring or working with children outside a traditional classroom.

The role

Your day will depend on the pupils and setting you are supporting, but responsibilities could include:

  • Providing individual and small-group learning support

  • Helping pupils participate in lessons and school activities

  • Breaking tasks down into manageable steps

  • Supporting communication, interaction and independence

  • Providing reassurance and consistency during challenging moments

  • Encouraging positive engagement with learning

  • Working closely with teachers and other professionals

  • Recording relevant information and following agreed support strategies

  • Maintaining clear professional boundaries and safeguarding standards

The role is not about doing everything for a pupil. Good SEND support is often about finding the right balance between providing help and giving a young person the confidence to do more for themselves.

Who could this suit?

Essential:

  • Someone reliable, patient and emotionally resilient

  • A genuine interest in working with children or young people with additional needs

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • The confidence to follow guidance and work collaboratively with school staff

  • A clear understanding of professional boundaries and safeguarding

Desirable:

  • Experience as a Learning Support Assistant, SEND Teaching Assistant, SEN Teaching Assistant or Teaching Assistant

  • Previous experience supporting SEND

  • Experience within education, care, youth work, mentoring, tutoring, childcare or sports coaching

  • A relevant degree or qualification in education, psychology, childcare, SEND or a related area

Transferable experience will be considered for suitable opportunities.

Why consider SEND support?

Working as a Learning Support Assistant gives you the chance to see progress that is not always measured by grades.

It might be a pupil beginning to communicate more confidently, remaining in a lesson for longer, managing a situation differently or becoming less dependent on adult support.

Those small changes can represent significant progress for the young person involved.

The experience can also provide a strong foundation for people hoping to progress into teaching, educational psychology, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, social work or other SEND-related careers.
