Mathematics Lead/SEND Teacher - Special School
Full-time, long-term, and term-time only (temp-to-perm opportunities)
Southwark, South East London
MPS/UPS - PAYE

Teaching mathematics within a specialist autism school means recognising that every student learns differently and that learning can look very different for young people with complex needs, severe learning difficulties (SLD), autism, and a range of additional learning needs. It’s about more than delivering a curriculum; it’s about making learning accessible, building confidence, and helping young people develop essential skills that support their independence and everyday lives.

This involves understanding individual learning profiles, adapting teaching approaches, and finding creative, practical ways to engage students who may experience significant barriers to learning. For some pupils, this may mean developing early mathematical concepts, number recognition, counting, sorting, and understanding quantity, while for others it may involve working towards functional maths skills, problem-solving, and more formal mathematical qualifications.

This is a school where staff are supported, collaboration is valued, and student well-being sits alongside academic achievement.

The role and School:

Our school is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Maths Teacher / Maths Lead to deliver engaging, differentiated mathematics lessons to secondary-aged pupils within a specialist autism setting. The school supports young people with autism, complex needs, severe learning difficulties (SLD), and a range of additional learning difficulties and developmental needs.

You will play a key role in developing students’ mathematical understanding, communication, confidence, problem-solving skills, and independence. You will adapt teaching to meet a wide range of abilities, from pupils working on early developmental and pre-key-stage learning through to those accessing more formal mathematics pathways.

The role will involve:

  • Teaching mathematics and adapting the curriculum to meet individual needs, developmental stages, and abilities.
  • Supporting pupils with autism, SLD, complex needs, and a range of learning difficulties to access mathematics through personalised and differentiated teaching.
  • Developing early mathematical skills, including number recognition, counting, matching, sorting, sequencing, shape, pattern, and an understanding of quantity.
  • Delivering functional mathematics opportunities that help students apply their learning to everyday situations, develop life skills, and build independence.
  • Planning engaging lessons using practical activities, visual supports, concrete resources, repetition, and real-life applications to make mathematical concepts accessible.
  • Adapting teaching to accommodate different communication styles, sensory processing differences, attention levels, and individual learning profiles.
  • Creating a calm, structured, predictable, and supportive learning environment where students feel safe, understood, and ready to learn.
  • Working collaboratively with teaching assistants, therapists, families, and other professionals to support students’ academic progress, communication, emotional wellbeing, and wider development.
  • Monitoring progress through appropriate assessment methods, recognising small steps of achievement, and adapting learning to ensure meaningful progress for every student.
  • For the Maths Lead role, developing and reviewing the mathematics curriculum, supporting colleagues with differentiation and assessment, sharing effective practice, and contributing to the ongoing development of maths teaching across the school.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a close-knit, supportive team and help shape a mathematics provision that recognises and celebrates the individual strengths and achievements of young people with complex needs.
