We are working with an outstanding specialist secondary school in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to recruit a dedicated Maths Teaching Assistant to join their team from September.
This is a fantastic opportunity to support young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning, develop confidence in mathematics and achieve qualifications that will open doors to future education, employment and independence.
The school is an all-boys specialist secondary setting that provides a calm, structured and nurturing environment where strong relationships are the foundation of success. Staff work collaboratively to help every student re-engage with learning, celebrating progress at every stage of their journey.
Located in Tower Hamlets, the school is easily accessible via the District Line, DLR and Elizabeth Line, making it an excellent opportunity for candidates travelling from across London.
The Role
As a Maths Teaching Assistant, you'll work alongside experienced teaching staff to deliver engaging, accessible maths support that meets students where they are.
Many pupils have experienced disrupted education, low confidence or anxiety around maths. Your role will be to break learning into manageable steps, build trust and encourage students to believe in their own ability while developing practical numeracy skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
Whether you're supporting GCSE preparation, Functional Skills or foundational numeracy, you'll play a key role in helping students achieve meaningful progress.
Your Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small-group maths interventions tailored to individual learning needs.
- Support students working towards GCSE Maths, Functional Skills and Entry Level qualifications.
- Break down mathematical concepts into simple, engaging and accessible learning activities.
- Use visual resources, practical equipment and real-life examples such as budgeting, sport, shopping and everyday problem-solving to bring maths to life.
- Support students in understanding mathematical vocabulary, worded problems and multi-step reasoning.
- Recognise and respond to maths anxiety, helping students regulate emotions and remain engaged with learning.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with young people who may have experienced educational trauma or low self-confidence.
- Promote resilience, independence and a growth mindset by celebrating effort and progress.
- Support emotional regulation using calm, trauma-informed approaches and positive behaviour strategies.
- Monitor student wellbeing, academic progress and safeguarding concerns, recording information in line with school procedures.
We're Looking For Someone Who
- Has experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, SEND, Autism, ADHD or challenging behaviour.
- Has worked within an SEMH school, Alternative Provision, PRU or similar specialist setting.
- Has experience delivering 1:1 or small-group learning interventions.
- Has a strong understanding of secondary mathematics, Functional Skills or GCSE Maths.
- Understands how trauma, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and mental health can affect learning.
- Is confident adapting learning to meet individual needs and abilities.
- Is calm, patient, resilient and able to remain positive during challenging situations.
- Can build meaningful relationships that encourage engagement and trust.
- Has a genuine passion for helping young people develop confidence, independence and life skills.
- Brings energy, empathy and a positive sense of humour to the role.
