Maths Teaching Assistant

We are working with a specialist secondary school in Tower Hamlets that is looking for a Maths Teaching Assistant to join their team this September.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys maths and wants to make a real difference. You'll be supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning, build confidence and achieve qualifications that will support them in the future.

About the Role

Working alongside the Maths Teacher, you'll support pupils both in the classroom and through 1:1 and small group interventions. Many of the students have experienced disrupted education or struggle with confidence, so you'll play an important role in breaking learning down into manageable steps and encouraging them to believe in their own abilities.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Supporting pupils working towards GCSE Maths, Functional Skills and Entry Level qualifications

• Delivering 1:1 and small group maths interventions

• Breaking down mathematical concepts into simple and engaging learning activities

• Using practical resources and real-life examples to make maths more accessible

• Supporting pupils with maths anxiety and encouraging confidence in learning

• Building positive relationships with young people and helping them stay engaged

• Promoting resilience, independence and a positive attitude towards learning

• Supporting emotional regulation using calm, consistent approaches

• Working closely with teachers and the wider SEND team to support pupil progress

About You

We're looking for someone who:

• Has experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, SEND, Autism, ADHD or behaviours that challenge

• Has worked in an SEMH school, PRU, Alternative Provision, youth work, care, mentoring or another role with transferable experience

• Has experience delivering 1:1 or small group interventions

• Has a good understanding of secondary Maths, Functional Skills or GCSE Maths

• Understands how trauma, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and mental health can affect learning

• Can adapt learning to meet individual needs and abilities

• Is calm, patient and resilient when supporting pupils

• Can build positive relationships and motivate young people

• Has a genuine passion for helping pupils develop confidence, independence and life skills
